Andy B. W. oh Top at Every Marker Qualifies Smartly For Equipoise Mile Splashes Six Furlongs in 1 :12 to Beat General Staff By Two at Arlington Park By CHARLES HATTON ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights. 111., June 20.— Andy B. W. qualified smartly for his engagement in the Equipoise Mile when he splashed six furlongs of slop at his field in the ,000 Highland Park Handicap, feature of a wet afternoons sport here on Arlington Heights. Jockey Job Dean Jessop had the Red and Green Stables four-year-old going hanandlily at the finish, two lengths before the fast-closing General Staff, racing for Larry MacPhail and Andy Crevclins Rado Kid finished third another length back. Oil Capitol, a trailer to the stretch, was fourth in a field reduced to six with the withdrawal of Pet X Bully. Andy B. W. had won the Fleming Memorial back at Lincoln -at -Hawthorne and his tally this afternoon was immensely popular as the crowd of 9,457, smallest of the meet to date, sent him away an odds-on choice. He returned .60 in the tote after going over the distance in 1:12 in front-running fashion. Though todays attendance was in something of a contrast to those earlier in the week, it was considerably above the 8,052 for the same day, under pretty much the some disagreeable weather conditions a year ago. That was incidentally the lightest gathering of the entire Arlington -Washington season of 51. i Stakes Horses Compete The Highland Park was an overnight. but it drew a stakes field, with Andy B. W.. General Staff, Recline, Royal Mustang, and v Oil Capitol all engaged in the Equipoise s a week from this Saturday. Oil Capitol e was the highweight under 115 pounds, giv-s ing General Staff a pound and the winner six. With Pet Bully scratched, Arcaro was given the mount on General Staff, who * went away a well played second choice but ;t could not seriously trouble Andy B. W. at in n the weights. . The story of the Highland Park is soon told, for Andy B. W. posed the field a " question of catching him as soon as the k break came, and none of them were able y to join him. Recline and Royal Mustang y were within a length or so of him, racing d lapped on one another in the run down n the far side, and both fired and fell back on the turn. Rado Kid and General Staff then took up the chase as Andy B. W. opened up four swinging into the home-y stretch. General Staff, brought to the out-y side by Arcaro for the drive, ran over - Rado Kid for the place award and still - was gaining at the end. But that may 1- have been simply because Jessop was not punishing Andy B. W. the last yards. He tt skipped under the wire still two lengths in e front. Oil Capitol was about six lengths at £ off the winner while racing last down the d backside, and made a good if belated run tt from the furlong pole, finishing fourth, -• Baldwin Rides Daily Double !r Apprentice Ronnie Baldwin rode winners e of both ends of the Daily Double when he d had Martin Whelan, the favorite, home g first in the opening race and brought _ Dream Cream down in advance of the e others in the second. The Daily Double paid j. 8.80. Martin Whelan went to the front early and was never headed although doing his best at the end to hold the long-priced Shining Deed. Dream Cream, a two-yearly old, broke out of the maiden ranks in flashing past the early leaders in the l stretch to win by six lengths. Mrs. Sadye Smith, who holds the contract on apprentice Baldwin, is the owner of Dream Cream. _ The Rex Ellsworth silks were seen in front for the first time at the meeting when l~ the two-year-old California -bred colt, Boo _ Who, won the third. It was likewise the be m first victory of the session for apprentice John Burton, the Ellsworth contract rider. The Iowa jockey rode well, saving ground k with his mount throughout. Local Corner, ■• ridder by Baldwin, came from last place to Jt be a game-going second. in n Playman, from the Reverie Knoll Farm, -r showed the way for virtually the entire dis-;° to tance in the fourth race, thereby chalking ! J up a success for jockey Gerald Porch. Play-st man was never in danger after going half " the trip. Vi Dog reached second place and :" - So There was a charging third. in in Only six runners went postward in the !n one mile fifth, but it was one of the best by ,y events of the afternoon, with Bashful Sun, ie the eventual winner, and Like Hover, rac-2 in ing as if a team all through the stretch. 5* Bashful Sun, ridden by apprentice Willie ld Cox, made the pace and, although topped r" by Like Hover ar eighth out, continued strongly to get a nose decision.
