Eight Accept Weights For Classic at Ascot Scrub, Fleeting Rock to Carry Messersmith Colors in Feature By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, June 20. — The Ascot Classic, a handicap for three-year-olds and older horses, holds the spotlight on the customary nine-race card for tomorrow. The ,800 purse is the same as last year, and for the fifth running of this traditional offering, eight, including an entry, accepted the weights assigned by racing secretary and handicapper, R. H. Held. The A. W. Messersmith entry of Scrub and Fleeting Rock are topweighted with 115 and 110, respectively. Scrub carried 115 pounds to a 10 -length victory in the How Hotel Purse last Monday, and was going away at the end. The competition will be considerably tougher than in that event, when such as Mrs. N. Ferraras Dotty N., and A. L. Beachs Gallant Junior were in his wake, but with his early" foot, he will undoubtedly be the one to catch. His stable-mate, Fleeting Rock, is dropping seven pounds from the burden she carried to victory in the Mansfield Purse. Mke Scrub, she too has a wealth of early foot, but appeared to be giving way the last sixteenth of the six and one-half furlongs. At the furlong marker she was four lengths on top, but wound up but a length the best under a punishing ride through the stretch. Jockey Clarence Wright rode both Scrub and Fleeting Rock to their respective victories and, while he is under suspension, no overnight rider has been named. Others in the event and their weights are the A. and H. Stables Garrymark, 109; Mrs. N. Pauls Make Haste and P. Mans-bargers Reckonwith, 108 each; R. F. Mc- Greerys Solar Lad, 107. and the Barber • Stables Lonesome Gal, and Mr. and Mrs. V. Decavitchs Glitter Gulch, 105 pounds each. Glitter Gulch would appear to have more than just an outside chance off his victory in the Hudson Purse last Tuesday. The Grand Slam gelding coasted to the wire five and one-half lengths in front of the Cremona Farms Royal Knave, and carried 118 pounds, all of which was jockey Richard Bell. The 13 pounds shift in his favor might find him bettering his time for the seven furlongs of 1:26%, which was just two seconds off the track record. Last years classic was won by J. M. Barnes Miss Prime and her winning time was 1:26%. Jockey Fred Katz rode her to her two and one-half length victory. It is quite probable that Kratz will again have a mount in this running.
