The big sources in this respect are the yearling sales held annually at Lexington, Ky., and Saratoga Springs, N. Y. These offerings attract buyers from all sectors with the liberal handed getting the bigger news display. The book, the American Racing Manual that is, has a raft of statistics on this matter and record prices for yearlings that failed as racing properties is always a topic of conversation with the paddock set. The names most mentioned as failures are New Broom 5,000 , Hustle On 0,000, Pericles 6,000, Broadway Limited 5,000 and Speculation 5,-000 . Last year C. H. Jones, the Calif ornian, laid out 60 grand for a filly by Bull Lea and Lady Lark to be known to the racing legions as Perfection. Today it is a misnomer, the miss faced the starter on three occasions, finished second twice and third once for total earnings of ,425. However, she has time and the breeding prospects are promising. The cheaper ones that turned out to be Cinderellas or Prince Charmings, well, we have a flock of them and the one most talked about is Alsab. The youngster, a prep school football star, will enter the University of Kentucky this fall to study veterinary science. . . .Trainer Dolly Byers reported that the speedy juvenile Centime, owned by William Goadby Loew, is on the sidelines. The youngster is a victim of a stone bruise and will be an absentee until the Saratoga season. . .We made a bloomer the other day and tried to turn Bill Winfrey into a miracle man. Native Dancer was fired for a splint and not an osselet. Anyway the colt is coming around nicely. . .Tommy Trotter is busy packing his go-away bag in preparation for his trek to Centennial race course out Denver way. Mrs. Trotter will supervise the chauffering on the way out. . . .Mrs. Esther duPont Weir came up from Wilmington, Del., to witness her fencer Clive of India perform in the Amagansett. AAA When lightning struck the Gene Jacobs barn here during the height of Thursdays storm the paddock gang started reminiscing about other storms. Empire City was a favorite target of the electrical elements while Saratoga Springs never went unscathed. Max Hirsch has vivid memories of the Saratoga Springs electrical display for it was months before some of his charges returned to top racing performances, following the appearance of one of those thunderbolts atop his barn . . . Jim Ryan, who emphatically denies the report that the two-year-old Belfaster was named for him, was on hand yesterday. He saddled a couple of starters, one on the ►flat and the other for the hurdles. Following the races he headed back to Wilmington . . John Clark, tub thumper at Keene-land, horse breeder, traveling ambassador, founder of the America for Kentuckians club and salesman with or without options or down payments, checked in today. The boys rushed for the frigidaires to develop sales resistance when the news of Ms arrival was bruited about. . .Cyrus S. Julli-en, president of Aqueduct, entertained a dozen or so lawyers at a pre-race luncheon yesterday. There were enough devotees of Blackstone on hand to settle any arguments legal or otherwise that could have deevloped . . . Harry Stevens, of the catering clan, returned from a class reunion at Yale up New Haven way. He appeared to have survived the ordeal without aid of medical assistance.
