, **i™ JUDGES STAND By Charles Hatton Intersection Rivalry Marks Chicago Sport Arcaro Now Strives to Beat Own Record Grass Overnighter Shows Stakes Value Turf Races Prolong Horses Usefulness ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, HI., June 20. Ben Lindheimer offers his Arlington Park patrons a double feature this week-end, and both the Wright Memorial for three-year-old, "and the Pollyanna, for two-year-old fillies, have classy , fields fields placing placing the the midwesterners midwesterners versus versus rivals rivals fields fields placing placing the the midwesterners midwesterners versus versus rivals rivals assembled from both coasts. The prospect of a return engagement between the seasons starlets, Bubbley and Biddy Jane, is the fascination of the Pollyanna. Bubbley beat Biddy Jane as the climax of rather a stirring stretch duel in the Debutante, but Jimmy Collins tiny chestnut has since beaten the best easterners, returning here to win the Miss America, and the Detroiter wants convincing she is not the tops in her division. It will come as a distinct surprise if one of the field downs both. The Wright may turn up up a a Classic Classic possibility. possibility. The The Easts Easts Hanni- Hannibal has journeyed here for the race, and will meet the Midwests Oh Leo and Californias Dark Count, winner of the San Luis Rey. Real Delight was expected in some quarters to be a starter, but she won the Cleopatra only last Monday and is awaiting later engagement. Altogther, this first of the Arlington Park Jockey Clubs six Saturday cards is fully up to the high standard of excellence established at past meetings, and with a bit of luck in the weather the crowd will almost certainly exceed the 21,995 who shoved ,339,305 into the maw of the "tote" the same day a year ago. By the way, we think it ought to be noted, since there has been so much discussion of Arlingtons overnight distribution, that nine races were increased a total of ,600 the first six days. An average of two races daily have been marked up. And we should think it will please horsemen that the second condition book will contain 18 races having a greater value than the same type of races in the first book. Lindheimer has built up Arlington and Washington sport through his policy of "bigger purses for better horses," and each year has increased distribution as the volume of play warranted. As this is written the attendance is up 25.6 per cent, and the play 29.1 per cent. However, the weather was a little unfair last season and this doubtless has some bearing on the comparison. Jockey Eddie Arcaro, who hopes to break his own national mark of riding 26 stakes winners in a year, will have the mount on Bubbley in the Pollyanna, and this is a circumstance which may add to both their records of achievements. He now has ridden the winners of 20 of 51s stakes, including the Derby, Belmont and others of the richest of them. It is permissable to doubt if Arcaros presence in the stirrups will improve the Calumet fiUys price, however, for percentage-wise he has a larger following here than in New York, indeed, has influenced "The Trend" upward. His decision to ride at Arlington this summer adds something to the general tone of the meeting and is, in a way, a compliment to Ben Lindheim-ers generous stakes program, if we may say so without making him appear unduly avaricious. It does not take any jockey long to figure 10 per cent of 30,000, which is the added money in Arlington features. And Arcaro hopes to be here, also, for Washington Park. He may absent himself July 12 long enough to ride Intent in the 00,-000 guaranteed Hollywood Gold Cup. In our opinion, the Kentuckian ranks with Earl Sande and Cal Shilling as one of the most skillful riders we have seen. He now has infinitely more polish than he had a decade ago, when stewards thought his work a bit crude. His riding style is reminiscent of Sandes in that he relies more on hand-riding than on whip-riding, has excellent judgment of pace and the faculty of thinking as fast as he can ride. It is perfectly true, as S. E. Veitch observed not long ago, many riders seem to "freeze up" with 00,000 at stake. As this is written, Arcaro is working on his three thousandth winner, a score which began at Agua Caliente in 32, almost a year after his first mount, at the old Latonia . course near his Covington home. Since his weight never varies much from 113 pounds, it seems probable that he will continue active for at least the next several years. The importance of stakes to tracks overnighters was never more clearly illustrated than it was here at Arlington Heights the other day, when an otherwise unremarkable turf race attracted a field in eluding Volcanic, Chickle H. and Going Away. These appear to be the outstanding prospects for the 5,000 Stars and Stripes on the Fourth of July. Except for the stake, which brought these horses here, the overnighter in reference would have drawn an anonymous lot of quadrupeds having little or no "box office." Going Away won, with a weight pull, but old Volcanic was wearing him down in what was the veterans 52 debut, and, we should guess that he will once again be the-one-to-beat in Chicagos rich turf course events. His 51 rival, Royal Governor, who beat him in the latest Stars and Stripes, now has been retired from competition. Volcanic, Chicle II. and others are proving Ben Lindheimers point that racing on the grass tends to prolong horses usefulness. Turf ana: Now that he has been expatriated to France, Whirlaway is gaining some recognition as a sire of useful horses. His average earnings per starter are 4,072.50, with 116 U. S. starters. His 25 foals of 47 now include 25 winners. Thirty-three of his 71 colts in five crops have been gelded. ... Ben Lindheimer was released from the hospital, hardly, will be a visitor during Arl-ton. . . . Bill Helis is due late in the meeting. Incidentally, has about 12 young mares at Bancocas. ... Stewards and jockeys attend morning movies of the previous days races here. . . . We think that Ted Atkinson is setting a good example by reporting sore horses at the gate when they fail to warm up satisfactorily. It is in the best interests of everybody concerned. . . . Detroit play has vindicated Dr. Lindy in his advocacy of "Bigger purses for better horses." Four allowance events last . week-end drew a crowd who wagered more than ,000,000. . . . The Post and Paddock Club has a waiting list. . . . Arcaro tells The Tribs Arch Ward he does not feel he knows enough about horses to turn trainer when he hangs up his tack. . . . Mrs. Warren Wright is a Post and Paddock regular. ... Washington Park is advancing a landscaping program.
