Davey, Vejar Renew Ring Feud Tonight Detroiter 2-1 Choice Over Eastern Rival in 10-Round Rematch at Olympia Arena By LLOYD NORTHARD United Press Sports Writer DETROIT, Mich., June 24. — Clever Chuck Davey, the educated southpaw making his first hometown appearance as a headliner, figured today to make it two in a row over cautious Chico Vejar in their 10-round welterweight bout Wednesday night at Olympia. In their first meeting, six weeks ago at Chicago, Davey had his younger rival on the canvas four times, but never for keeps. Vejar was a battered, beaten boxer. Body blows spelled doom for the New York University drama student from Stamford, Conn., and Davey, holder of a masters degree from Michigan State, planned to plague Vejar again with a concentrated attack on the mid-section. On the strength of his first victory over Vejar, Davey has been installed as a heavy favorite with odds of 2 to 1. But the 21-year-old Vejar isnt worried. While Davey goes to work on the body, Chico will pound away at Chucks tender eyes which have been cut often. Eager to Square Matters And Vejar is eager to square matters with Davey and regain a lofty perch on the welterweight ladder. He freely admits that his task wont be an easy one. After all, Davey is uncon-quered in 33 professional bouts and he won 93 out of 94 amateur figrrts while grabbing four NCAA titles. "Sure, he hurt me at Chicago," Vejar said. "But I was strong at the end and getting stronger every minute. This time Ill know what to expect and Ill be ready for him." Like Davey, Vejar also boasts an impressive record. He has lost only two of 42 fights. While Chico will be after revenge, Davey will be out to impress fellow Detroiters. He hasnt fought in his home town for 15 months when he made his last eight preliminary appearances in the Motor City. Davey knows that a second victory over Vejar could earn him a shot at champion Kid Gavilan. He already holds an impressive triumph over former lightweight king Ike Williams. The bout will be televised nationally at 9 p. m. EST.
