R. Smiths Jones Brook continues to display steady improvement and today won the most impressive score of his local campaign when he defeated seven rivals in the featured Duxbury Purse. The Florida-bred son of JaTta-Jones, received a heavy ride from Jimmy Davern and gained a length decision over Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Grants Top Brass at the end of the mile and a sixteenth test. Another j length farther back, Vicente D. Navarros Classy Chance took the minor award. The co-favorites in the race, Cellini and Goyon- • der finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Another ideal day prevailed at Suffolk Downs and 10,142 patrons were in attendance to witness formful racing, despite the upset of the choices in the feature. Four choices registered through the first six events. , Jones Brook, despite the fact that he had | defeated Cellini in his last and had won three previous outings here anchhasnt been j worse than second in seven starts, paid a | tidy 0.20. The Smith gelding was timed in 1:45% over a fast racing strip. j Barclay Stables Big Bargin went right j out to attempt a runaway of the Duxbury but Davern kept Jones Brook within striking distance of the leader, while the I choices dropped far off the pace. At the end of the first six furlongs, Big Bargain was three lengths in the van and going easily. At that point, Jones Brook was * roused and the consistent sophomore * literally ate up the ground to reach com- ] mand inside the final furlong. Once in the s lead, the ultimate winner moved clear and had no trouble staving off the late bid j Top Brass. s Classy Chance was easily the best of the t others, being at least 20 lengths off the t j s t t pace down the backstretch, then closed stoutly to lose by a couple of lengths. More than that distance was lost negotiating the turns.
