The The Gink Gink in in Smart Smart Churchill Churchill Score; Score; Dink Dink Justifies Justifies Sportsmans Sportsmans Support Support Brown Hotel Racer Beats Golden Trend Favorite, Second Choice Put On Stiff Battle; Apprentice R. Dever Rides First Winner By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky., May 11. — The Gink, a five-year-old gelded son of Pictor and Ishot, carried J. Graham Browns Brown Hotel Stable silks to a smart victory here this cloudy afternoon in the co-featured St. Matthews Purse before a crowd of approximately 6,000 Downs "regulars". Benefited by an unusually well-judged ride from the sorrel-topped veteran jockey Darrell Madden, The Gink raced strongly through the stretch for a length and three-quarters accounting over A. F. Walls hard-hitting Golden Trend. Pollard and Harkins Our Challenge earned the show another three-quarters length back and he was a similar margin before Thomas F. Devereux Gay Hunter for that portion of the purse. The Gink shouldered 114 pounds under the allowances of the St. Matthews and sped the mile and one-sixteenth over the fast track in 1:45%. Installed a 9 to 5 choice over his seven rivals on the strength of several excellent Florida performances, the Brown Hotel Stable gelding was one of the more popular winners of the day and received a nice round of applause when Madden galloped him back to the scales. The Gink Moves Up Gen. J. D. Mclntyres Bama Girl led the St. Matthews field until well inside the stretch where The Gink moved into second position and closed gamely enough to put the pacemaker away and hold the fast-finishing Golden Trend safe. The latter stallion was was in rather close quarters near the half mile marker and came fast when clear, but could not reach the flying winner. Our Challenge, well up for the entire trip, was a determined third, while Gay Hunter turned in a good effort for fourth. Baba Girl, weary after her display of early foot, finished a well-beaten fifth. Carl M. Grahams Wabash Moon, an Omission-sired miss, proved best in the field of 10 quick fillies engaged in the Lassies Purse. Responding readily to apprentice Forrest Kaelins good handling, the Terre Haute, Indiana-owned winner streaked to the wire four lengths before her nearest river, C. E. Buckleys Full Circle, while another length away, Ned W. Brents Vadapur, who led for the major portion of the three-quarters mile sprint, garnered third honors. Dixianas Wind-whisper was along to salvage fourth money. Apprentice Robert Dever, under contract to trainer Joe Puckett, handled his first winner, T. F. Calhouns Simple Sis, vistress in the six-furlong fifth race. Young Dever, a Louisville boy but 18 years old, rode Simple Sis in clever fashion, his mount coasting to the wire with a three-length margin over the early pacemaker, H. R. Pennys Parklea. J. P. Keezeks Dream Cream ran third, a half length away, while Etta B. McAtees well-regarded Darkie was along for fourth in the field of nine starters. Chiles and Kislins favored Babys Delight flattered with a nice display of early speed but failed to stay during the stretch run and wound up seventh. Simple Sis, clocked in 1:12% for the six furlongs, was an outsider in the "tote" at UV2 to 1. Mrs. Stella Lottis Gbibli, a recent claim from the Baylor O. Hickman barn, made good at the first asking for his new owner, trimming eight other three-year-olds in the six-furlong third while under a well-judged ride from the veteran Willie Lee Johnson. Ghibli took command after leaving the upper turn and reached the final marker with three and one-half lengths to spare over Brown Hotel Stables Hearts Buzz, while Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Walters Slithereen lasted to get the minor portion of the purse. Ghibli, a gelded son of Arabs Arrow and Reigning Lass, completed his task in 1:12% and paid 1.60 straight. Mrs. Thelma Otts locally-owned Hobad, with Doug Dodson at the reins, beat Brown Hotel Stables Tidy Sum, Mrs. R. L. Reine-mans Neros Mermaid and five other useful platers in the six-furlong fourth, returning his backers 9.20. Hobad, a four-year-old Revoked-sired colt, was timed in 1:11%.
