Senator Joe Noses Out Brazen Brat Victor, Runner-Up Qualify Handsomely at Pimlico for Baltimore Spring Handicap PIMLICO. Baltimore, Md., May 11.— Qualifying handsomely for the week-ends Baltimore Spring Handicap, Alan T. Clarkes Senator Joe and Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Brazen Brat this afternoon finished noses apart as named in the featured Baltimore Sports Reporters Association Purse, a dash of five and one-half furlongs. Just one length behind the top pair came Gee M. Cohens Jess Linthicum, with Walter A. Edgars Jack the Great less than a length behind that one in fourth position. Senator Jce. a homebred five-year-old son of Alaking and Bola Mowlee, was flirting with his own track record of 1:06 and his time today was just two-fifths of a second shy of that mark. He operated under 122 pounds, much of which was in the person of his regular rider, Bobby Mitchell. Senator Joe was the second choice behind Brazen Brat with the crowd of 12,511 and paid .20. Jess Linthicum. a speedy son of Delib-erator who was making his seasonal debut, possessed the most early speed, while Brazen Brat and Senator Joe were slower than usual early, with the latter breaking last in the eight-horse field. Jess Linthicum continued to cut out the pace and enjoyed a three-length lead at the quarter pole, with Jack the Great, Cary Boshamers Yama and Danny Sheas Sweet Vermouth heads apart for the place. Mitchell Waits for Opening Both Brazen Brat and Senator Joe appeared ready to make their moves, with the former electing to circle the field while Mitchell preferred to await an opening with Senator Joe. The field bunched up a bit near the furlong pole, as Jess Linthicums lead was cut to a length and a half and Senator Joe secured racing room along the rail to take over third position. Apparently in need of the race to attain peak form, Jess Linthicum shortened stride during the drive and gave way, as Senator Joe moved around him and Brazen Brat collared that one from the outside. The drive to the wire was a thrilling one, with both horses and riders giving their utmost for victory. Once having disposed of Jess Linthicum to take a slight lead, Senator Joe refused to give way and clung tenaciously to his narrow advantage as Brazen Brat was beaten a nose for the third time in her last four starts, sandwiching a tally in the quartet of appearances. The running of todays race speaks well for a stirring battle on Saturday, with the first seven finishers again expected to do battle. Only Flushing Dusk, who was overmatched today, is ineligible for the Baltimore Spring Handicap. The only saddle double accomplished prior to the feature was turned in by apprentice William Hartack. The youngster scored with Ruth M. Pinks Albion, who paid .00 in the second race and completed a 62.80 Daily Double for those who had coupled him with Marathon Stables Marengo, the first race winner. Hartack then came back in the fifth to win with Waited, a two-year-old Ocean Wave colt who is owned and trained by Mrs. Barbara M. Kees. Waited paid .80 as third choice in the juvenile dash. A pair of Maryland favorites, Joe V. Scelzis Joe Mandell and jockey Nick Shuk made good in the mile and a furlong sixth race, rewarding their numerous backers with a .20 return. Joe Mandell was in front every step of the journey and was j timed in 1:56% while leading Jerry Lynchs i Attention Sir and Shenandoah Stables I Black Canasta.
