This will be the richest race ever run at the historic west side course which conducted its first race meeting back in 1891. The mile and one-quarter Gold Cup was boosted from 0,000 to 5,000 added this year and its conditions changed to make it an early closing event. Nominations for the Gold Cup close this Saturday, May 16, with subscriptions be-. ing 00 each. A payment of 50 must be made by July 1 to keep eligible, it will cost 50 to pass the entry box and 50 addi-: tional to start. Conditions of the race also call for sup- plementary nominations at ,000 each to be made before September 12. The Gold Cup will feature the closing-day program of October 17 at Hawthorne, whose 35-day annual meet gets under way September 8. Racing secretary Lawrence C. Bogen-schutz estimates that the nomination list for the Gold Cup will number 50 or more horses. Recently returned from a trip to the eastern circuit, Bogenschutz said he had assurances from some 15 horsemen in that sector that they would file nominations before the Saturday deadline. • Taking the conservative nomination figure of 50 as a base, it would start the purse off with ,000. And should 40 make second payments of 50, that would add 0,000 more to the total. With a starting field of 12, plus the associations endowment, the purse would gross 02,000.
