Suffolk Boasts Best «t Horse Colony in Years Nirgal Lad and Arthur S. Rated Tops of Two-Year-Olds at Track SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 11. — Better purses for better horses, a policy adopted by Suffolk Downs a few years back by Judge John C. Pappas, president of the East Boston oval, is now paying dividends. Suffolk has the finest two-year-olds, three-year-olds and older handicap stars on the grounds it has had in many seasons. Among the "babies," T. A. Sears Nirgal Lad and Irving Gushens Arthur S. are a pair of fleet juveniles. Theyve hooked up three times at the Downs, each won one and in their "rubber" meeting Saturday, Nirgal Lad was a nose winner going the four and one-half furlongs in :53%, which is only a fifth of a second away from the track record. G. S. Colellas Switch On and V. Posners Swift Steve are also highly regarded. In the local three-year-old division, the Downs has W. J. Beatties Park Dandy, J. M. Grieves Miss Joanne, Mrs. J. M. Woodcocks Epic King, C. H. Everitts Supreme s Bub and R.. W. Collins Star Chief to name a few. Park Dandy, a New England homebred, stamped himself as a top flight sophomore when he ran a smashing second to Royal Bay Gem in the 0,000 Jersey Stakes at Garden State Saturday. Trainer Augie Hutchins, who shipped Park Dandy back to the Downs over the weekend, reported that the gelding came out of the race in good shape. Plans are for Park Dandy to run at least one turf race here while being pointed for the 5,000 Yankee Handicap. Such older campaigners as Larry Ellis, Algasir, Good Shot, Pictus, Caldwell, High Head, Little Step, Royal Duke, TJ. S. Navy, Shrewd, Metropolis, Nola Hash, Our Dorie, Shadows Start and Villager form a speedy band for racing secretary "Eb" Pons to call on for his features. Tomorrows feature will be a six-furlong test in which Good Shot gets a real test. The Big Game colt, who has won his last two races in convincing fashion, is pitted against Caldwell, Royal Marvel, High Head, Atomic Fire and Plus Fours. In addition to Good Shot, Caldwell and High Head are eligibles for Saturdays 0,000 Governors Handicap. The chances of either or all of the trio to appear in the week-end stake will hinge on their manner of performance tomorrow. With the advent of good weather at Suffolk Downs, the first turf race of the current meeting is scheduled for tomorrow. The popular grass strip appears in grand shape and the about a mile and a sixteenth contest, which is for cheap platers, drew a full compliment of 12 with four others on the "also eligible" list.
