Intent Steps Along Seven Furlongs in 1:26, Handily Appears Up to Metropolitan Mile; Tom Fool Goes Easy Mile in 1 :41 BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 11. — Two of the leading candidates for the Metropolitan and Suburban Handicaps, to be renewed here on May 23 and May 30, turned in promising trials at Belmont Park this morning. Brookfield Farms Intent, who was sidelined when frightened during the stable fire at Jamaica late in March, after winning the San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita, stepped seven furlongs in 1:26, handily. Greentree Stables Tom Fool, who won his first start of the year in impressive style at Jamaica, breezed a mile in 1:41. Intent appeared to tire slightly toward the end of his good move, after getting fractions in :23, :35, :47, :593/5 and six furlongs in 1:1316. The War Relice five-year-old spent several weeks on the farm, but indicated today that he will probably be up to the mile "Met" a week from Saturday. Tom Fool evidently did a little more than trainer John Gaver wanted as he was waved down through the last quarter of his easy mile. The handsome son of Menow was clocked in :35f :48 and 1:13% for the first three -quarters of his prep. He had breezed seven furlongs in 1:29 over a sloppy track on Thursday after being scratched from the Toboggan because of the wet track. Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords One Count, who is also pointing for the mile and a quarter of the Suburban, breezed a slow five furlongs in 1:04 this morning. Lawrence W. Jennings Eolus, who alternates between flat races and hurdles, impressed the work-watchers this morning as he went a handy seven furlongs in 1:28. He has no local stages engagements on the flat, but is eligible to Thursdays Charles L. Appleton Memorial Steeplechase.
