SHREWD moved up to engage the leader after a half-mile, gained command entering the stretch and withstood a sustained drive from LEGATE. The latter drew clear under restraint, skirted the inner rail, continued on gamely after giving way and was pressing at the end. EABANI, never far off the pace, came wide into the stretch and was unable to make up ground. FLYING JIB, forwardly placed and saving ground, flattened out when put to pressure. COLOR GUARD had no mishap. PINOCCHIO flashed brief speed and weakened. VILLAGER was outrun. Overweight— Pinocchio, 4 pounds. NINTH RACE 1 1-8 MILES. Whirlaway, July 15, 1942— 1:48-4-130. BILLETUDO assumed command at once, was placed under steadying restraint, saved ground and had enough left to hold PERFECT BAHRAM safe. The latter, reserved under stout restraint until the final quarter mile, was brushed by EASY HOMER, continued on gamely, but was unable to reach the winner. BLUE THANKS moved up along the inside to near contention after five furlongs, swung to the outside in the stretch and failed to rally. EASY HOMER moved to engage the leader after six furlongs, bore in slightly and weakened. FESTIVAL II. saved ground to no avail. BRIARLICK ] went evenly. ARROGANT flattened out.
