Giants Tumble Dodgers Again, 5 to 1 Jim Hearn Hurls j » First Full Game Also Aids Own Cause With Two-Run Double; Erskine No Puzzle to New Yorkers By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., May 22.— Jim Hearn pitched his first complete game of the season as the New York Giants defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers, 5-1, today for a sweep of the two-game series and their sixth straight victory. Hearn, who had been knocked out of the box in seven pervious starting assignments, also aided his own cause with a sliced two-run double to right field in the fourth inning. Hearn walked three and did not strike out a batter, but he limited the Dodgers to seven hits. Brooklyn, which suffered its seventh loss in 10 games, scored its run in the fifth inning when Junior Gilliam, Pee Wee Reese and Duke Snider singled in succession with two out. The Giants collected seven of their eight hits and four of their runs off Carl Erskine, who has yet to defeat the New York club at the Polo Grounds in his career. The surging Giants took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Snider failed on a shoestring catch and Davey Williams low liner went for a triple, plus Alvin Darks second straight double. Erskine Wild Erskine, wilder than usual, walked Bobby Thomson and Wes Westrum in the fourth inning and the Giants quickly took advantage of his generosity. Hearn sliced a curving liner off the right field wall to drive in both runners and give the Giants a 3-0 bulge. * After the Dodgers scored in the fifth, the Giants restored their three-run lead when sixth-inning singles by Whitey Lockman, Thomson and Westrum produced a run. They added their fifth anv1. final tally when Hank Thompson led off the seventh inning with his fifth home run of the season off relief pitcher Bob Milliken. Hearn, who evened his seasons record at 3-3, retired the Dodgers in order in only two innings, but was rarely in serious trouble. Score by innings: R. H. E.
