Fourteen Juveniles in William Penn Full Flight Given ► Garden State Call Due de Fer Goes Into Stake j Unbeaten; Golden Gloves to Meet Joey Boy Over Route By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 22.— The William Penn Stakes, a 0,000 added five-furlong dash, will have 1 its 11th renewal here tomorrow with a field I of 14 juvenile colts and geldings named j overnight, including two stable couplings. , Heading the list of aspiring youngsters are , Wheatley Stables Full Flight, an already , seasoned campaigner who is familiar in . stakes company, and J. W. Rodgers Due de Fer, a winner of his only two races and equaler of the local five-furlong track rec- , ord in his last sortie. The William Penn will be presented as , the fifth race, with the nominal feature spot as the seventh race reserved for eight veteran performers competing at a mile and a sixteenth. This latter event is a condensed review of last Saturdays Valley Forge Handicap, matching again Belair Studs Golden Gloves and Joe Gavegnanos Joey Boy, who finished noses apart after a long and bitter struggle in that fivture. King Ranchs High Scud, the favorite who finished fourth in the Valley Forge, also returns his challenge. The battle among the two-year-olds will bring out several worthy candidates. The Maine Chance Farm is represented by two of the many youngsters in their large string, War Pointer and Noble Risk. Brook- meade Stable is relying on Martyr. The Saxon Stable has sent in Taxpayer, and the Duntreath banner is to be carried by IU-takem and Hypothetical. Stout to Ride Full Flight is trained by veteran Sunny" Jim Fitzsimmons and will be ridden by Jimmy Stout, who was boosted into the saddle by Fitzsimmons for his victory astride Johnstown in the 1939 running of the Kentucky Derby. This colt, a son of Ambiorix — Grey Flight, by Mahmoud, finished fourth in the recent Juvenile Stakes at Belmont Park, also placed a fast-closing fourth after overcoming trouble in the Youthful and won the Juvenile. Fitzsimmons has trained Full Flight "long" for his recent races, breezing six furlongs a few times, and he can be expected to be going strong at the finish. Due de Fer is an imposing looking colt by Spy Song and Lady Waterloo, by Quatre Bras n. He won going away in a three-furlong dash at Gulfstream Park launching his career, and was in front by six lengths here when he equaled the track record of :58V5. He defeated such well-regarded opponents as Iron Heel and Wolf Gal, who was second in the Fashion Stakes, and was being only mildly urged to tally in his excellent manner. The majority of observers believed he won much easier than Lord Putnam did when he first established the track mark, and could have bettered the time by at least a couple of fractions had he been pressed. Logan Batcheller rode him in his last victory and will be back tomorrow. Both of the Maine Chance Farm youngsters are worthy of note. War Pointer won by himself in :58 over the straight course at Belmont on last Tuesday, and Noble Risk was in front until the final stages of his last race. He is still a maiden, but could develop the better of the two. Taxpayer qualified handsomely with a victory over a sloppy course at Belmont 10 days ago, winning a division of the race in which Noble Risk finished unplaced. Martyr, who will be ridden by Ira Han-ford, displayed improvement to close with a rush and win his last race at this course. Both he and Illtakem, who appeared short for the effort. when he finished second in a swiftly run event, here, are two strong local threats. Among such youngsters none can be denied a chance for sudden development, but the others have not as yet shown form to warrant an upset. Two of them are first-time starters, C. Lawrences Opera Light and Duntreath Farms Hypothetical. L ] i i j ] , 1 j . j i | « ; | | ; , « 1 ;
