; I I Senators 18-Hit Attack Crushes Yankees, 12 to 4 WASHINGTON, D. C, May 22 UP.— Johnny Mize of the Yankees set an American League record today .by coming through with his fifth straight successful pinch hit, but the Washington Senators, aided by a game-ending triple play, defeated New York, 12-4. Backed by an 18 -hit attack, ex-Yankee Bob Porterfield coasted to his fifth victory of the season as he snapped the world champions four-game winning streak and limited them to eight hits. Porterfield started the ninth by giving up singles to Billy Martin, Andy Carey and Mize, batting for Ray Scarborough. Mizes single scored Martin. Art Schult ran for Mize and Irv Noren, next man up, lined to Porterfield who threw to Mickey Vernon doubling Schult off first. Vernon then relayed to Pete Runnels nailing Carey off second. Mizes single was his fifth straight pinch hit and broke the American League of four set by Les Fleming with the Cleveland Indians in 1947. Peanuts Lowrey of the Cardinals holds the Major League record with seven straight pinch hits. Allie Reynolds, who had tost the only previous game the Yankees had "dropped to Washington, again was the victim. He lasted only one inning as the Senators touched him for five runs on six hits.
