Seaward Annexes Naperville Purse Chombro Winds Up Closest to Victor Veteran Hasty House Runner Favors Muddy Footing While Odd-On Hawthorne Choice HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 22.— Although the weather was threatening and the racing strip a ribbon of goo following an early morning storm, 10,739 rain-togged patrons came to this course to watch todays sport. The majority did not have much luck as five straight favorites went down to defeat before Seaward, a short-priced choice, won the Naperville Purse, best race of the afternoon. The eight-year-old gelding from the Hasty House Farm, came to the finish line under wraps to beat Chombro by three lengths, with Pena-way finishing third, and Abbe Sting, fourth. The distance was one and one-sixteenth miles, and Seaward, ridden by Johnny Adams, paid .60. Adams had a "handfull of horse" on Seaward most of the way. The son of Pilate, who, in the past, has accounted for some of Chicagolands most important stakes, went to the front early and was taken under stout restraint. Chombro made several attempts to catch him but to no avail, and coming through the last sixteenth Adams found time to take a couple of glances around. It was clear that Seaward has lost none of his mud-running ability with the years. It was his first success in eight starts this season, but he has been competing much better company. Jean the Joker Wins for Gregory Jean the Joker, recently claimed by J. J. Gregory, won at the first asking for his new owner when he traveled to the finish line well in advance of Courts Maude, an outsider, in the opener. A son of the onetime good mudder, Jean Valjjean, the winner revelled in the going with Paul Bailey in the saddle. Apprentice Donald Holmes, who steered his first winner early in the week, came back to have Criteria down in front for his employer, Mrs. Nellie Mikel, in the second. Criteria raised something of a ruckus prior to the start and was off last in a field of 10, but she mowed them down in the stretch to win by one length. Her light weight might have had something to do with her last-minute charge. The Daily Double paid 8.80. ,
