Africance Wins Hancock Purse; DeSpirito Rides Three Winners SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 22. — Africance, a bay daughter of Ajax — Blackie II. sporting the silks of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Grant, proved a popular winner of the Hancock Purse here today, beating W. L. Curies Mintaway by a half length. It was three and a half lengths farther back to Benhaven Farms Bendigo in the six furlong dash contested by eight sophomores. Installed the choice by the majority of the MM patrons, Africance paid HM while turning in the excellent time of 1:10% over the lightning-fast racing strip. It marked the initial win for the filly, who is trained by Eddie Legere. Armando Martinez was the winning rider. Tony DeSpirito continued to flash the form he showed in winning the 1952 leading rider crown. The Lawrence youngster had a triple completed through the seventh race. His present hot streak began two days ago when he piloted four winners and added three more on yesterdays card. De-Spiritos winners today were T. P. Morgans Occupy-Pass in the second race, Dom W. for J. R. Dwyer in the fourth, and Henry Forrests Inlet lfl» to the sixth race.
