Nicodemus Laran, nine-year-old Hairan gelding, attained winning form for the first time this year when he accounted for this afternoons featured Joe H. Palmer Purse on the pre-Preakness program. Duntreath Farms favored War Token was second, three and one-half lengths behind the winner and a length and a half clear of Roy C. Markus Avion. Heavy rains during the night left the racing surface in a muddy condition but a firm bottom made for good times during the afternoon. Larans time for the mile and a sixteenth of the feature was 1:45% and he paid .20 to his backers in the crowd of 11,111. Avion, a sprint winner in his previous local outing, was responsible for the pace in the Palmer, a race honoring the late turf editor of the New York Herald-Tribune. Both Laran and War Token were being rated early, with the latter proving too much for his rival when both were set down for the "pay run." Hartack took the opener with Detective, a .80 favorite, then won the third race with Rosa G. at 5.40 and the fourth race with Millie Fagan, a 0.60 longshot. Mollie Fagan was the first of two win-, ners for the Barclay Stable and trainer Ray Archer and she was forced to with-i stand a claim of foul lodged by the rider of Sylvester Richs Tenure, who finished second. The other Barclay-Archer winner was Big Bargain in the following race. Tommy Barrow drove this .40 chanc to victory over High Ground Stables Siren Song and Russell Hallowells Gaelic Gal. The silks of Louis Lee Haggin II. were carried to victory by Uncle Tom in the sixth race, the .60 favorite responding well to Ronnie Nashs urging to wear down Walter Appels Mid Stream.
