Down Sub Fleet by Head Odds-On Hill Gail Third in 4 Arlington Stake as Crowd Of 24,760 Watches Program By J. J. MURPHY ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, HI., June 27. — Ruhe, a stretch-running son of Menow, racing in the silks of the Hasty House Farm of Mr. and Mrs. Allie Reuben, of Toledo, Ohio, registered the greatest victory of his career when he won the thirteenth running of the Equipoise Mile here today. Admirably ridden by that master judge of pace, Johnny Adams, Ruhe came from many lengths out of it to stage an exceptionally strong stretch, run and catch Dixianas Sub Fleet in the final strides to win by a head. Sub Fleet, in turn, finished one length in advance of Hill Gail, the odds-on favorite, in a finish that had the crowd in an uproar. • Fourth place went to Smoke Screen. Comes From Ninth Place Ruhe came from ninth place at the quarter to come strongly on the outside through the stretch and be up in time after Sub Fleet, who had headed Hill Gail in the stretch, seemed to be well on his way to victory. The speedy Baybrook made the pace, with Royal Mustang in closest proximity, and Hill Gail third and Arcaro having him under wraps. When ready, nearing the stretch bend, Hill Gail easily moved to the front, and turning for home hugged the rail and seemed to have the race at his mercy. Then Sub Fleet, who had been traveling in fifth place, move! Continued on Page Four » I I.I I I..II.IILIB |»P ..J... Sub Fleet then opened up, but Ruhe, with Adams booting and •whipping, came down the outside to be up as previously mentioned. Ruhe was coupled with Oil Capitol and, although the pair were second choice in the wagering, they paid 5.00. Hill Gail was a 1 to 2 choice as the field of 12 lined up at the gate. It was a good start and the race was without incident except for the fact that Baybrook seemed a trifle sore after pulling up. The race marked the second triumph for Ruhe in four starts this year. He won two races in 20 starts as a four-year-old last season, but was second nine times. Hill Gail did not have an excuse in the world, although he was required to give Ruhe 15 pounds. The crowd of 24,760 attending the races j today were treated to a variety of weather. Climatic conditions were sunny and pleasant at the outset, but when the breeze died down it became quite humid and lightning started to flash and the wind began to blow following the running of the fifth race. Although Chicago and nearby towns reported cloudbursts, but a slight sprinkle had hit the track prior to the running of the feature race. Miz Clementine Triumphs Four horses were withdrawn from the Equipoise Mile. They were Pomace and Big Stretch, who comprised one half of the Hasty House Farm-Mrs. Harry Trotsek entry, and Handsome Teddy and Abbe Sting. The race was worth 5,500 net to the winner. | Mr. and Mrs. Gene Markey made a last minute airplane trip to view Hill Gail in action in the Equipoise. They arrived in Chicago shortly before the afternoons sport began and also had the pleasure of seeing the good two-year-old filly, Miz Clementine, score a maiden victory. Trainer Ben Jones sent Calumets star filly, Miz Clementine, postward for the first time in the third race, and the little sister of the great race mare, Two Lea, made a show of her opposition to win by five lengths. Little doubt that Miz Clementine could have bettered her time of :58% for the five furlongs had she been meeting with stronger opposition, but, as it was, jockey Arcaro. took her in hand when she got to the front and she was under fairly snug wraps coming to the wire. The public made Miz Clementine a short-priced choice and she paid but .40. Pielettaway, an outsider, was second, and Alsab Ace finished third. Miz Clementine, through her clever effort, now looms as the favorite for the rich Arlington Lassie Stakes. Rico Rancho, a three-year-old ridden by Jack Chestnut, won the fifth race the hard way. Outrun early and unable to find the opening for which he tried nearing the stretch turn, the gelding came around several horses on the bend to finish fast and win going away. Belle Nell, representing Calumet Farm, was second, a half length in advance of the favored Dubuque.
