Open Hansen With Arcaro Day Dean of American Riders to Ride in Special Race With Jimmy Lynch, Joey Renick By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 27. — The New England racing scene shifts to this popular Rhode Island oval on Monday and Judge James E.Dooley and his associates have set the stage, for a brilliant opening of the 24-day session by arranging for Arcaro Day. Narragansett Park observes its twentieth anniversary this season and it is only fitting that the genial president conceived the idea to honor the dean of American riders. Back in the inaugural year of the track, Arcaro was a comparative unknown who rode some of his early-career races here. Also in that memorable year of 1934, Jimmy Lynch and Joey Renick were listed as members of the jockeys colony at Gansett and they, too,, have been invited and have accepted an invitation to take part in Mondays ceremonies. The appearance of the three veteran riders has prompted racing secretary "Ty" Shea to arrange for a three-horse match event for the "visiting riders as an added attraction on the days 10-race card. The local management is putting up* a purse to be distributed on a winner-take-all basis and the trio will draw for mounts at saddling time. At first, the management announced that there would be no wagering on the match event, but later changed their decision and straight wagering will be permitted. All three riders have agreed to accept other mounts during the day. The feature attraction for the day has been named the Eddie Arcaro Purse, honoring the Jockeys Guild president, and will be an allowance test for three-year-olds and upward at six furlongs. The value of the event has been set at ,500. Nine" Handicap Stars Vie Nine top handicap stars of the recent Suffolk Downs meeting have been named in. the feature. Phil Schwartz Charlestdnr Jim Beatties Good Shot, Mr. and Mrs. -J: M. Lingles Larry Ellis, Irving Gushens Soldier Son, River Divide Farms Andre, Putriment, Caval and Ghmuras Little Step, Melpet Stables Noch Eins, Emerald Hill Stables Eternal Moon and Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Grangers Sabaean comprise the field j for the Eddie Arcaro Purse. Arcaro is slated to ride Good Shot and that will go a long way in making the English-bred colt one of the choices. Good Shots best performance in this country was at Mondays distance when he won the Governors Handicap at Suffolk Downs. In winning that race, the imported colt defeated Larry Ellis, ,*with Tony DeSpirito in the saddle. The same combination figures to be a prominent factor on Monday. Andre, the Cinderella horse trained by Rollie Shepp, has won two stakes in a row at Suffolk before shipping here and will be respected despite the shorter distance of the dash. The Pavot colt holds two decisions over Larry Ellis gained in the Toma-sello and Puritan handicaps. The first-named was at nine furlongs and last Saturday Andre established the pace and held on to outlast Soldier Son and Larry Ellis at a mile and 70 yards. During the next 24 days, four stakes events will be decided at Narragansett, headed by the eighth running of the 5,000 Providence Stakes, styled exclusively for three-year-olds. Nominations for the Providence closed with 53 of the top sophomores being made eligible to meet over the nine-furlong route on July 22. The racing silks of some of the countrys foremost stables are represented in the nominations. The first blue-ribboned event of the meeting, the King Philip Handicap, will be run on July 4 and has attracted an eligible .list of 25. The King Philip is for three-year-olds and older to travel a mile and- a sixteenth for a prize of 0,000 added. On July 18, the Governors Handicap, also a ,000 added event, is slated for renewal. Styled for three-year-olds and upward, the nine-furlong test has a nomination list of 24 from which to draw. The final stakes ~of the Gansett summer session is listed as the seventh renewal of the Narragansett Nursery, to be run on closing day, July ,25 . The two-year-old, six-furlong race carrier, an added value of 0,000 and there art 65 youngsters eligible. In keeping with the fast moving pac; of improvements, Narragansett official: have streamlined their plant with the-latest speed-providing and public-protectins equipment. The racing film will make ifc New England debut after a measure o: success in California. This service provide* a complete moving picture of the ehtiri running of every race. Another improvement at Gansett is tht installation of Daily Double machines. Tht tickets are issued in speedier fashion and have proven successful in other sectors of the racing universe. Minimum purses at the summer meeting: of Narragansett Park have been advertised at ,200. The daily programs will begin at 2:00 p. m. Nine races will be offered daily.
