Colonel Barker Outruns Sign It at Cranwood Park Takes Cleveland Press Purse In Record Seven-Furlong Time By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent CRANWOOD PARK, Warrensville Heights, Ohio, June 27. — An enthusiastic croyd of 7,382 turned out to witness the nine-race program here this afternoon and were not only treated to formful racing but to some fine overhead conditions. The Cleveland Press Purse headlined the card and was captured by Mrs. A. Wolfes Colonel Barker, a good-looking gelded son of Snark. Colonel Barker was strongly ridden by Eddie Plesa and paid .60 in setting a new track record for seven furlongs of 1:27%. Sign It was second, three parts ojt a length back and a length and one-half before Bob 0*Nick. In a brief ceremony following the race, Franklin "Whitey" Lewis, sports editor of the Press, presented trainer James Price with a trophy. Also participating in the ceremony was the charming Miss Diane Deane, one of Clevelands leading models. Colonel Barker was unhurried in the early stages of the race and on the back-stretch it was Brass Hat and Cockpit racing for the lead. At that time the eventual winner was Just starting his move while on the outside. After the field had raced five furlongs, Colonel Barker was in front, by two and one-half lengths with Cockpit, the favorite, second, and Sign It moving up in third .position. Through the stretch Colonel Barker started to tire but under the guidance of Plesa, who held the gelding together nicely, he staved off the belated rush of Sign It. Colonel Backer, who was the second choice, was winning his sixth race of the year in 14 starts. It was his initial race over the local track. C. M. Harpers Cheriful, given a nicely judged ride by Richard Gordon, scored a half-length decision over Lil Perry, the favorite, in the Anniversary Purse. Roberta-Win was up to be third another five lengths back. The winner was the second choice and returned her backers .60, touring-the six furlongs in 1:14%, just three-fifths of a second over the track record. The eventual winner broke the best, but was soon displaced on the front end by Lil Perry and as the horses went down the backstretch was in second position a length and one-half in arrears. Racing around the far turn, Lil Perry drew clear by two lengths, while saving ground, with Cherifil still second and Gold Locket third. On the stretch turn Gordon decided he better make his move and he hit the filly several times and at the furlong marker had made up a half length and was beginning to ramble. At the 70 yard pole Cheriful moved on even terms with Lil Perry, who was holding on tenaciously, but in the final strides to the wire drew clear by a half-length, the Rancocas and Polly Drummond Stakes in her last two starts. Though not a stakes winner, Fascinator won two of her three starts in fast time and was beaten inches by Evening Out in the National Stallion. They have drawn the inside and outside post positions, with Ovie Scurlock breaking Fascinator from number 1, while Dave Gorman will be on Incidentally, who has drawn No. 8 in the gate. Three of the rivals to the Maine Chance pair appeared in a dash here last Wednesday. Alfred G. Vanderbilts When in Rome, who carries the same burden of 119 pounds that is assigned the entry, won that sprint, while Wheatley Stables Bold Imp and Greentree Stables Mainsail finished third and fourth. The latter two carry 113 pounds and Bold Imp might have been best in the race, but was bothered by her sta-blemate, Flapper, who finished second. Eric Guerin will ride When in Rome, Ted Atkinson will be on the fainthearted Mainsail, while no rider has been named for Bold Imp. Easy Winner of Last Woodvale Farms Fancy Diver won her last here by five lengths on a sloppy track, but seemed to be" trying her best to stop in the stretch, while Sara Chaits Black Melody was unplaced in that event. The field is completed by W. Goadby Loews Case Goods, who will probably be second choice. This daughter of Case Ace scored in very fast time at the first asking at Belmont Park, then was beaten a head at odds oh by Donnajack. That five furlongs on the straight course was run in a sparkling :56%. Hedley Woodhouse is slated to ride at 113 pounds. The Astoria will be the sixth event and is preceded by the ,500 First Fiddle Handicap, a classified event at a mile and a sixteenth, with a familiar field of nine. Cockfield Stables Arcave, who has won four of his last five starts, his only failure being in the Massachusetts Handicap, is topweight here with 126 pounds. Eric Guerin is to ride the son of Discovery. Arnold Skjevelands Flaunt, who scored a surprise triumph in the Queens County Handicap last week under 105 pounds, has. been assigned 116 here. High Tide Stables Swoop and F. H. Starks Assignment, who finished far back in the Queens County, have 116 and 112 pounds, respectively. There will probably be strong support for Belair Studs Golden Gloves, who has many creditable races this year and gets in with 120 pounds. Nick Wall will be in the saddle. E. P. Taylors Castelton, a stakes winner in England last year, who didnt race too badly in his American debut behind Arcave at Belmont Park, is in with 114 pounds and may show improvement. Hank Moreno will ride. The field is completed by F. C. Rand, Jr.s, Anchor Man, 108, Lazy F. Ranchs Out Point, 106, and Phantom Farms Nullify, 106 pounds.
