UNITED PRESS 1 NEWS I BRIEFS 1,000 Casualties in Japanese Floods TOKYO, Japan, June 27. — Nearly 1,000 persons were listed as dead or missing in raging floods and landslides in historys worst storms in southern Japan. Japanese press reports from the stricken areas said 234 were dead and 683 missing and hundreds more were injured. Thousands were homeless. The floods centered in the southern island ot Kyushu. Dr. F. H. Lahey# Famed Surgeon, Dies BOSTON, Mass., June 27.— Dr. Frank H. Lahey, founder of Bostons famed Lahey Clinic and one of the nations foremost surgeons, died today at New England Baptist Hospital. The 73-year-old wrrld-famed surgeon had been hospitalized with a heart condition for two weeks. Say Reds Deporting Rebels _ BERLIN, Germany, June 27.— The Russians have begun mass deportation of anti-communists arrested during last weeks rebellion against red rule in Soviet Germany, it was reported today. Press reports, quoting recently-arrived refugees, said a 125-car freight train apparently loaded with political prisoners was sighted in Red Germany this week, moving East toward Communist Poland. Its eventual destination was unknown. Pullman Strike Averted A threatened Pullman conductors strike in Chicago and Los Angeles was averted early yesterday through Federal mediation efforts. A spokesman for the Pullman Company said union and company officials signed a mediation agreement at a meeting called by Leverett Edward of the National Mediation Board. Laniel Works on cabinet PARIS, France, June 27. — New French premier Joseph Laniel started today the ticklish jog of choosing the countrys 19th post-war cabinet from his sensitive supporters in the National Assembly. Laniel, named premier in a vote that ended a 37-day crisis, called floor leaders of eight different parties which backed him to his first official meeting at the Hotel Matignon, residence of French premieres. Group OKs Military Appropriation WASHINGTON, D. C, June 27. — The House Appropriations Committee approved legislation today providing 4,434,140,500 for the military services in the 1954 fiscal year starting July 1. The measure, which was ,284,790,500 below former President Trumans budget requests and ,337,422,-500 below the revised requests of President Eisenhower, carried funds for a third huge aircraft carrier of the Forrestal class. Winston Churchill 111, Parley Off LONDON, England, June 27. — Prime Minister Winston Churchill must take a rest for at least one month and the big three Bermuda conference set for July 8 has been postponed indefinitely as the result, it was announced today. ROKS Regain Territory SEOUL, Korea, June 27.— South Korean infantrymen regained today all territory south of Capitol Hill lost to the Communists during the past three days on the East Central Front. Counter-attacking troops of the ROK third division, smashed their way to the top of Lookout Mountain, which overlooks the old United Nations outpost Lone.
