RICO RANCHO was under slight restraint while following the pack and, unable to find an opening on the inside nearing the stretch time, came to the outside on the turn and, although required to go very wide, finished fast to catch the leaders in the last sixteenth and won going away. BELLE NELL was always close up and caught REBUS entering the last furlong, but was unable to resist the winner. OUBUQUE was with the pacemakers for the first half mile, then dropped back slightly, but came fairly well through the stretch. REBUS gamely withstood a challenge from PREPOSTEROUS to again take command in the stretch, but faltered near the finish. PREPOSTEROUS weakened after getting to the front nearing the stretch turn. PRINCE CONSORT was under restraint some distance back of the early leaders for seven furlongs, then came fast on the outside and, although going to the middle of the track on the stretch turn, forged to the front at midstretch and held BOBS ACE under urging. The latter was badly outrun to the stretch, then came fast between horses. ROCKY SIR slipped through on the inside around the far turn to take command, but weakened in the stretch. MR. M. and STREAMLINER were used up making the pace and tired. PLUNGER was never a factor, although closing some ground. WORTHY OPTION weakened after becoming prominent in the stretch. RUHE, as usual, was outrun early, but was under restraint while being allowed to get in full stride, then responded courageously to urging nearing the stretch turn and, coming fast on the outside through the stretch, was up in the closing strides to nip SUB FLEET. The latter was within striking distance until ready to make his run, then closed up on HILL GAIL after entering the stretch to catch the latter an eighth out and, drawing out slightly and although battling gamely to the finish, was unable to resist the winner. HILL GAIL, off forwardly placed, was nicely rated close to BAYBROOK and ROYAL MUSTANG for a half mile, then moved to the front when he pleased and saved ground entering the stretch, but weakened under his weight in the final drive. SMOKE SCREEN . closed a gap to finish fast. OIL CAPITOL made up more ground than the others and was going very fast at the end. JAMPOL was close early. COFFEE MONEY made a fair move on the stretch turn, then weakened. EL JAY and ROYAL MUSTANG tired. QUIET STEP and WHITHER were outpaced. P00 BAH was badly outrun to the stretch, but came fast on the inside through the stretch, caught SMACKOVER in the last few yards. The latter, well rated early, shook off YEA BAMA entering the stretch and withstood a mild challenge from SLIM, but his rider appeared to become overconfident nearing the end and seemed to be caught napping when POO BAH * closed up on the inside. SLIM made a good move entering the stretch, but was not quite good enough, although having ample chance in the run home. CURRAGH KING closed a gap and was going strongly at the end.
