Davey Hangs Up Gloves; Plans Television Career Chuck Davey, one-time golden boy of television boxing-, retired from the ring; yesterday, declaring Wednesday nights defeat to Vince Martinez "convinced me its time to hang up the gloves." "A decision to retire is a tough one at any time, but Wednesday night convinced me that this is that time," he said. "It Is particularly tough for me because I wanted to have a good fight before I left the ring as an active boxer." Davey, who is 29, said he would seek a job as a television fight sportscaster. He already has a local~show on a station at East Lansing, Mich. Davey suffered a seventh round technical knockout at the hands of Martinez in a 10 -round welterweight match in the Chicago stadium in which he was knocked down four times. The former Michigan State College flash showed little effect of the battering at a press conference yesterday to announce his retirement, except for a small mouse under his left eye and a swollen cheek bone. i
