Peabody Memories For Howard Wells Trainer of Hasseyampa Sent Out Billings to Win in 1948, Saw Sun David Disqualified LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, 111., May 27.— When trainer Howard Wells tightens the girth of Walmac Farms Hasseyampa, probable favorite for next Mondays 5,000 Peabody Memorial Stakes, no doubt there will flit through his mind memories of the 1950 renewal of Lincoln Fields traditional Memorial Day fixture, as well as that earlier day in 1948 when he saddled the Peabody winner, the handsome Billings, also owned by R. W. McHvain, proprietor of Walmac Farm. By almost common consent, Billings was regarded as second only to the great Citation among the three-year-olds of 1948. Not since Billings year, until Hasseyampa appeared, has there been such an outstanding favorite for the mile and a furlong Memorial Day feature. The story of the 1950 renewal, held at Washington Park, was altogether different. On that occasion Wells saddled J. S. Bradleys Sun David and had the pleasure of seeing him finish first. But the satisfaction of having another Peabody winner was short lived. Jockey Kenneth Church, on Hasty House Farms Lot o Luck, who finished second, claimed a foul against the winner. Lot o Luck Placed First Churchs objection was sustained by the stewards after questioning Sun Davids rider. Angel Rivera, and Church. Sun David was disqualified in favor of Lot o Luck on the grounds that Rivera had repeatedly struck the Hasty House colt with his whip in the stretch run. The Puerto Rican rider drew a long suspension. By a singular circumstance thevWalmac colt, Hasseyampa, has. as probably his principal rival next Monday another Hasty House representative, this being the bay colt Sea O Erin. Like Lot o Luck, he has "o" in the middle of his name, without an apostrophe. Lot o Luck faded into the cheap claiming ranks. Sun David stilLjs running in stakes. He finished fifth to Hasty House Farms- Pomace in a division of the Crete Handicap on opening day at this meeting and is a candidate for Saturdays 5,000 La Salle Handicap. I Despite his prestige, Hasseyampa is expected to have quite a lineup against him next Monday. Other three-year-olds regarded as probable starters against the Walmac colt, who came into prominence through his good efforts in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, include besides Sea O Erin the following: M. H. VanBergs Endon, winner of the Peabody Prep, James Padgetts Eighty Nine, Sam E. Wilsons Red Ace and Alsabs Ace, Dr. R. C. Austins Notable, Valley View Farms Mon Mar, and Clarence Hartwicks Red Sultan.
