Atkinson Enjoys Commanding Lead in Belmont Jockey Race BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., "May 27. — Ted Atkinson, first string rider of .the fashionable Greentree Stable, enjoys a commanding lead over his contemporaries for riding honors at this meeting. He has amassed 29 victories out of "149 mounts and, in addition, finished second on 24 occasions, third with 17. Nearest to him is Hedley Woodhouse with 14 victories. He is looked upon as a free lance, although verbal calls on his services belong to C. V. Whitney for some stakes and handicaps. Tied for third place are Eric Guerin and Jim Nichols, with 13 each and in fourth place is Eddie Arcaro with 10. Boland, Westrope and the apprentice Jimmy Can-gemie have nine each. Arcaro, no doubt, would have been closer to the top had he not run afoul of the rules when he became a "dead duck" for 10 days for careless riding on the horse named Dead Duck. The geographical aspects of the race staged here are quite a contrast. Atkinson! hails from Toronto, Ont., while Woodhouse was born in Vancouver, B. C. Eric Guerin is a Cajun from down Louisiana way, while Nichols hails" from the wide open spaces of the southwest, Las Cruces, N. M. Arcaro was born in Cincinnati, while Boland hails from Corpus Christi, Texas, and Westrope from Baker, Montana. Cangemie is the sole authentic New Yorker in the picture, for this youngster claims the big city as his birthplace and Astoria across the Queens-borough Bridge from 57th street as his early playground.
