Cubs Clouting Homers At Near-Record Clip ST. LOUIS, Mo., May 27 UP . — The Chicago Cubs will maul National League pitchers for 215 home runs this season — only six fewer than the all-time major league record for a year — if they continue their current production. The Cubs reached the 50 mark in their thirty-sixth game last night when Hank Sauer, Ernie Banks, Dee Fondy and Joe Garagiola homered. The Cubs hit 137 homers and were seventh in team batting last season. The major league record of 221 round trippers in one season was established by the New York Giants in 1947.
