Sam, Golden Tempest To Victory in First Two Races RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, May 31. — It was the case of the local boy making good at River Downs here this afternoon when jockey Gilbert Roser, the 31-year-old relnsmanr who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, guided the winners of the first and second races to complete a 67.00 Daily Double pay-off on the combination of Pvt. Sam, in the curtain-raiser and Golden Tempest, who was victorious in the second. Pvt. Sam, who races in the interests of E. A. Bischoff, scored his initial victory at the meeting by a half length over the long-shot Brief Sugar in a driving finish in the opener, rewarding his numerous supporters who installed him as the favoi-ite. The Mel Eppley gelding negotiated the six furlongs over a track termed "good." Golden Tempest, the property of H. W. and M. F. Thomas, and who accounted for the second event, was. an invader from Wheeling, West Virginia, and this was his first triumph in five starts this year. He finished two and one-quarter lengths in •advance of Speed Wrinkles and reeled off the six furlongs in 1 : 13% over a fast track. The track was labeled "good" for the first but vastly improved and it was recorded at "fast" for the second as Golden Tempests time suggests.
