132 Remain Eligible To Del Mar Futurity Sept. 10 Turf-Surf Headliner Expected to Gross 0,000 DEL MAR, Calif., June 1.— Richest. Del Mar Futurity in history is practically assured for the turf-surf course summer meeting opening July 27, it was disclosed today by Donald B. Smith, president and .general manager. An imposing, record-shattering total of 132 swift 2-year-olds has been, kept eligible for the event, to be contested, for the eighth time, closing day, Sept. 10. Carrying 0,000 in added money, the Del Mar Futurity is expected to hit the 5,000 gross figure. Record gross for this stake-was 9,075 in 1952. The 132 youngsters on the eligible list remain from the original 410 nominated when the stake closed Sept. 4, 1954. It cost 0 for the initial nomination, and 00 to keep eligible last May 15. Currently, the Futurity has a value of 7,300, a figure expected to be increased with entry and starting fees at race time. Since its inauguration in 1948, the Del Mar Futurity has been annexed by first flight horses, including Star Fiddle, Your Host, Patchy Big Noise, Hour Regards, Double Speed and last summers Blue Ruler. It ranks as the two-year-old championship affair of Western racing. Included among this years 132 eligibles are many outstanding colt and fillies from the nations leading stables. Three stakea winners so far this year are in the line-up. They are Jack McElroys Scotch, undefeated winner of the Golden Gate Futurity and the second division of the Golden Gate Boy; Owl Stables Tecolotito, winner of the first division of the Golden Gate Boy, and Dr. and Mrs. J. R. Smiths Focus,, recent victor in the first division of the Cabrillo Stakes at Hollywood Park. Other winners so far in 1955 named for the Futurity are Action Jacksop, Blen Host, Family Album, Flying Earl, Free Dough, Ferke, Flying Atlas, Gliding Wings, General Riley, Lucky G. L., Mobile, Mafos-toutis, Piecocious, Re-Armed Robin, Star-lite Abbey, Silver Glen, and Yutta.
