I., N. Y., June 2. — Taking his fences with smooth precision, Montpeliers Shipboard scored an easy triumph in todays fortieth running of the 1,375 Meadow Brook Steeplechase, coasting to the end of about two and a half miles six lengths before Lawrence R. Troianos lightely weighted Cury Joe, who led Mrs. Ogden Phipps Neji another 15 lengths. " It was another 30 lengths back to Man-ton B. Metcalf, Jr.s, Beaupre, who set the pace for his victorious running-mate for more than a mile. James F. McHughs Jam was the only casualty of the race, hobbling badly and unseating Earl Phelps at -the thirteenth fence, after jumping poorly at all the earlier obstacles. Chose Champion Pro Tern Albert Foot rode Shipboard, who is now the chase champion pro tern, and the son of Battleship— Sea Borne, by Annapolis, whose sire and grandsire are both by Man o* War, paid .20 after getting the distance in a moderate 4:44% over a. firm track. Mrs Marion duPont Scott, who bred both Shipboard and Battelship, netted ,750 and a trophy as the winners share of the purse. This edition of the Meadow Brook attracted a crowd of 17,692 that turned out in pleasant weather. - Another Hyacinth was first to go to the front, closely followed by Beaupre, as the Meadow Brook field broke from the tape on the clubhouse turn. Neji was a farily close third for the first turn of the course, while Shipboard was in last place until Jam dropped back behind him passing the stands the first time. Turning into the front stretch the first time, Beaupre took a slight lead over Another Hyacinth, while the entire field began to close up, with Shipboard moving into third place after the water jump. Neji continued to make minor bobbles that cost him a little ground and "Dooley" Adams was forced to go to the whip with six furlongs to travel to stay in contention. Beaupre fell back, along with Another Hyacinth in the backstretch, while Shipboard moved into command with ease, and Curly Joe moved up rapidly under Charley Harr. Through the final half mile, Shipboard had no trouble maintaining a six-length lead, while Curly Joe, who was fencing cleanly and rapidly, turned in the best race of his career without seriously threatening. Neji regained a little ground at the end and-it was noted that his jumping improved when he was under pressure, but his earlier mistakes had taken too much out of him. Atkinson Astride Winner Jim Fitzsimmons saddled his sixteenth winner of the meeting and Mrs. H. C. Phipps Wheatley Stable completed a consecutive double when Dark Ruler equaled the best six-furlong time of the meeting in the Hollis Purse. Ted Atkinson hand rode the Bimelech colt to the finish four lengths before Spring Hill Farms early pacemaker, Shimke, who led High Tide Stables Blue Pencil another seven lengths. Dark Ruler was teletimed in 1:10% and paid .30. Laugh had won the preceding dash by the same margin under Eric Guerin and was teletimed in 1:11. R. C. Markus Saremm was second in that event, two lengths before V. L. Sheas Gale River. Laugh paid .10. Hedley Woodhouse monopolized the Daily Double, taking the opening five-furlong dash on the Widener straightaway with Lilly-Ann Stables Getthere Frank and the second at a mile and a sixteenth on Harry Kodanas Gallant Fanar. The pair returned 72.90. Getthere Frank led all the way in the opener, scoring by a handy three and one-half lengths over Ethel D. Jacobs In Wonderland, a "fielder," who led S. P. Stecklers Bactria by a half length. Getthere Frank paid .70 straight and was teletimed in :59 Gallant Fanar had a harder task beating Reuben Epsteins Hidi-Ann almost a length in the second race and paid 3.70 after getting the distance in 1:46. Wood-ley Lane Farms favored Sunrise tired badly here and finished sixth. Woodhouse was scoring his second Daily Double of the week, having turned the trick on Tuck and Sea Name at Garden State on Monday after having been ill for several days.
