Gilbert Thompson Substitutes For James at Bay Meadows SAN MATEO, Calif., June 2.— Gilbert Thompson, a 46-year-old veteran of the harness game, fras taken over as racing secretary for the trotters and pacers at Bay Meadows. Thompson succeeds Dick James, who has been recalled to the Columbus, Ohio offices of the United States Trotting Association. James has served as program director for the~USTA the past five years and he had been on loan to the California Harness Racing Association for the local meeting. James himself picked out Thompson to succeed him and he assured directors of the CHRA that "Thompson is highly qualified for the job." "Gil knows the harness game from top to bottom and I feel he will go on to make a name for himself as a racing secretary on the West Coast," said James. A resident of Pomona, Thompson has been associated with standard bred racing, since 1923, first as an owner and trainer and later as a placing and patrol judge. He had been serving as James assistant at thei Meadows meeting. „ »
