. . I On the Trot I Br MO RIOT KURLANSKY _ Free-For-AII Pace Feature Tonight Peter Vangundy Likely Favorite My Scotcli Belle Formidable Foe MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, HI., June 2. — Racing secretary Pete Langley carded a combined AA class junior free-for-all . . oace pace for for Friday, Friday, which which oace pace for for Friday, Friday, which which will be contested by some of the most successful sidewheelers at this meeting. In order of post positions for the mile dash, which is endowed with a ,800 purse, the following will line up: Bonnie Pete Gene Riegle , Peter Vangundy Mel Harmen-ing. ing. My My Scotch Scotch Belie Belle ing. My My Scotch Scotch Belie Belle Wayne Smart, Quiet Guy Jacques Gre-nier, Sammy Court Howard Beissinger and Victory Scott Clarence Curtis . But its not the horses alone that have distinguished themselves. With the exception of Smart, by many acclaimed as the nations outstanding sulkypilot since Greyhounds pilot, Sep Palin, passed away, the other five reinsmen are among the first six in the local driver standings, while Smart is quite successful with the main division of the Castleton Farm Stable on the Maryland circuit. There is little doubt that Peter Vangundy, one of the best pacers ever bred in this state, will be a strongly supported post favorite. My Scotch Belle, ranked -vvith the countrys sophomore elite last year, should have profited from two tune-up starts at Rosecroft Raceway. A victory by another horse than these two would be an upset. The Illinois Harness Racing: Commission approved a tenth race for both Friday and Saturday, the net proceeds of which will go to the. Horsemens Benefit Fund to .help the Aurora fire victims. The first two benefit races netted a total, of ,493.64 for the worthy cause. The Belvidere, a double-dash, early-closing event for 16-class pacers, topped an otherwise rather utilitarian post-holiday card Tuesday. Although not too much was. expected in the way of fast miles, almost 4,000 Maywood Park regulars were in for a pleasant surprise when the two dashes were clocked in 2:03% and 2:04, respectively. These respectable feats were not accomplished as many among the wagering public anticipated by either the Castleton Farm renresentative, Smart Choice, or Dr. Howard Youngs improved filly, Winifred, or even the unpredictable Little RalDh, but by Mrs. Henry Warrfen, Jr.s Caliornia-bred Arletan mare, Annette Tass. Smart Choice, a son of Hambletonian winner, Bill Gallon, from Freda Hanover, dam of such outstanding performers as Freeman Honover, Faber Hanover and Ford Hanover, on account of his excellent showing on the Grand Circuit last season and a recent victory in 2:04% at Rosecroft Raceway, was made a 2-to-l choice for the first heat. Having drawn the ninth post position, which is in the second tier right behind the No. 1 post occupied by the front-racing Linett, Smart Choice seemed to be what his name implied. Unfortunately, Linett made a break getting away and impeded the favorite, who was never prominent afterwards. For more than three-quarters of the mile trip it looked as if Little Ralph, this time on his best behaviour, would romp to another easy victory and even endanger B Havens track record of 2:01, with his fractions of 30 seconds for the first quarter, 1:00 Vs for the half and 1:30% for the three-quarters. The small Paul Mac-Pherson stallion still had a two-length lead on the final turn when Annette Tass. always in close attendance of the rapid pace, moved up to him and passed him in a few strides. Little Ralph, all but exhausted, raced on sheer courage that last bitter"eighth. With this fine effort, Annette Tass, a member of the Warren stable, crashed the select circle of horses that negotiated the mile in better than 2:04, the other ones being B Haven 2:01, Little Ralph 2:01%, Honers Truax 2:03%, Peter Vangundy 2:03% and Jake Rodney 2:03% : distinguished company, indeed. Proving that her first-heat victory was no fluke, Annette Tass, starting from the rail, then won even more impressively by four and a half lengths from Hedge Jester and Linett in 2:04, while Little Ralph ■ tired again from his pacemaking efforts. A big disappointment was Winifred, who in the first heat "never came up to the starting gate, but indulged in breaks.
