Garden State Has Successful Meet Handle and Crowds Exceed Last Year Willie Hartack, Dedicate And Four New Track Marks Highlight 25-Day Session : • Willie Hartacks sensational riding, ! Dedicates pair of superb performances, the establishment of four track records and last, but not least, increases in daily average attendance and pari-mutuel handle over the corresponding 1954 figures! combined to record the recent 25-day Garden State meeting as one of its very finest and most successful. A total of 584,851 fans filed through the Camden, N. J., plants gates April 30-May 30, representing a daily mean of 23,394. The 1954 figure, also registered during a 25-day session, was 22,659. I Garden States total mutuel pool reached 1,173,430 this spring, an average of ,046937 per diem. The daily average handle last year was ,023,413. Hartack, one of the nations leading ! jockeys and second to Willie Shoemaker for national honors the past two years, won with 46 of 169 mounts for a high percentage of .27 — and the riding title. Veteran Sammy Boulmetis, the runner-up, accepted 110 mounts and was successful with 23, half as many as Hartack compiled. Scored Triple Three Times On three occasions Hartack booted home four winners on a single afternoon. On May 16 he rode both ends of. a 4 Daily Double, which, coupled with two more victories, including the feature aboard Talora that day, gave him Iff winners in three days and 22 for the first 13 days of the meeting. On May 26 Hartack guided home four straight, including Mrs. T. Christophers favored Avis in the featured ,500 Forest Hills Purse. Undefeated Pollys Jet, ridden by Hartack, set a track mark of :58 for five furlongs in the 4,075 Cherry Hill Stakes May 18. An even -money favorite of the crowd of 22,400, Pollys Jet, under 119 pounds, assumed the lead soon after the start and never was headed. His time wiped out the old mark of :58ys, set by Lord Putnam live years "ago. It marked Pollys Jets fourth straight triumph and boosted his 1955 earnings to 9,925. Brookfield Farms I Appeal, also with Hartack in the saddle, carried 114 pounds over six furlongs in 1:09%, clipping two-fifths of a second off the old mark set by Ocean Brief five years ago, in the featured Bridgeton Purse May 16. It marked I Appeals second straight victory of jthe meeting. The other two track record breakers were Goforward and Subahdar. Gofor-ward, under 113 pounds, stepped a mile and 70 yards in 1:40% May 23, while Subahdar clicked off a mile and one-eighth in 1:47% while toting 116 pounds ih the Camden Handicap, May 21. Dedicate, Mrs. Jan Burkes quick three-year-old, won the Delaware Valley and Jersey Stakes to top the thoroughbreds in earnings with 6,850. Dedicates Delaware Valley score May 7 was worth 2,150; his triumph in the Jersey one week later, 4,700. Other stake winners were Helioscope in the Valley Forge Handicap, Pretty Plunger Rancocas Stakes, Royal Fan Colonial Handicap, and Gandharva in the Betsy Ross- Stakes. » T. J. Kelly won the training crown in a "photo" finish from E. W. King and W. J. Susini. Kelly posted eignt victors to seven each for the latter pair.
