| Host Gqgi Hard Pressed To Win St Louis Purse Beats Highly Favored ChanqeSnow With Jockey L. J. Colclasure Up FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., May 7. — The improved Host*Gogi, owned by M. A. Nicholas and ridden by L. J. Colclasure, leading rider at this meeting, I took the measure of E. E. Wilsons Chance J Snow, the odds-on favorite, in the featured mile and one-sixteenth St. Louis Purse here Saturday night before 8,730 patrons. Gerry Grayson, the third choice, was third in the six-horse race which was staged over a fast track. Lady Pheasant, Captain Buster and Traffic Miss completed the small field and finished in that order. Under double wraps while forcing the , pace of Captain Buster who was sent into : an" unnecessary long lead, the ultimate J winner took the lead quickly after five- j eighths. After opening a two-length lead entering the stretch, he was permitted to take his time until the final eighth when Chance Snow, who had slipped through next to the inner rail, moved up with a threat which carried the favorite to within a length of the Nicholas representative. In the drive to the wire it was a terrific battle between the pair with Host Gogi drifting out slightly under vigorous handling, and the favorite on the inside. Chance Snow got to within a half a length of the lead a sixteenth from the finish, but in the bitter drive to the wire hung and at the end was still that precious half length to the rear of the winner who was well supported at 11 to 5. Gerry Grayson, who made his move with the winner and was second turning for home, was a pair of lengths to the rear of the public choice. Chance Snow was one of four other favorites to go down, to defeat but most of the winners were well supported with the exception of H. H. Rendlemans Be Man, who got up to win by a nose from Royal Leoni, the favorite, and Mr. Hash, winner of the eighth race who was held at GY2 to 1. | In addition to riding Host Gogi to his .hard earned victory, Colclasure also [ handled Be Man, but he had to share riding honors with apprentice Mitchell Husser who drove home the Mikel Farms Ziggity and Signal Code, and Clarence Meaux, the successful one in the final two races on Mr. Hash and Crackice, respectively. I The sport will be resumed here Tuesday ; night with the usual nine-race program in [Which the six furlongs Caseyville Pirse tops the card. It brings together Thunder ! Bits, Miss Dana, New Citizen, Shoot Man, [Long Lake, Ionic, Lady in Haste and Pine , Forest. Prospects are for an "off" track as | the course this morning was sloppy from rains that fell throughout Sunday night.
