UNITED PRESS 1 NEWS BRIEFS NATIONAL: Good Progress. Foreign Aid Report WASHINGTON, D. C, May 7.— President Eisenhower told Congress today that the United States shipped 00 million worth of military supplies to free world partners in Europe and the Far East during the last half of 1955. In a "good progress" foreign aid report on the last half of 1955, Eisenhower said allied forces being bolstered by U. S. aid are equivalent to more than 200 divisions, over 2;000 naval ships and about 300 air squadrons, as well as related supporting units. Johnson Wins Sweeping Victories AUSTIN, Texas, May 7. — Senator Lyndon B. Johnson won sweeping victories Saturday in state Democratic precinct conventions and emerged today as a serious contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. In a majority of more than 5,000 precinct conventions, the Senate majority leader wrested control of the state Democratic Party from Governor Allan Shivers and with it the votes of Texas 56-man delegation to the national convention. Hollister Reveals Military Aid Program WASHINGTON, D. C, May 7.— John B. Hollister, foreign aid chief, said today the United States plans to give its allies 00 million worth of "advanced weapons" under the military aid program. Wisconsin Limps Into Norfolk NORFOLK, Va., May 7.— The battleship Wisconsin limped into Norfolk under its own power today. The destroyer escort Eaton, "with which, the battle wagon collided, at sea yesterday, needed a tug to make it safely to port. A Navy spokesman said the 45,000-ton Wisconsin was more badly damaged than first believed. The battleship could make only seven knots as it steamed home for repairs. Harriman Criticizes Moderation NEW YORK, N. Y., May 7.— Governor Averell Harriman said today that a new Democratic doctrine of "states duties" had replaced the old doctrine of "states rights," especially in the field of civil rights and social services. In a speech prepared for delivery at a luncheon meeting of the Convention of Councils of the jstate Commission against Discrimination, Harriman strongly criticized the attitude of "moderation" in the struggle against intolerance in the U.S. FOREIGN: Reject Anti-Smoking Campaign Demands LONDON, England, May 7. — The British Government today rejected Socialist demands for a national anti-smoking campaign. It held that the cause of lung cancer still is unknown. Minister of Health R. H. Turton admitted that statistics point to tobacco as a leading possible cause. But he added that "in my view in the present state of our knowledge, a national publicity campaign would not be appropriate." Assails Egypts Ban cn Shipping LONDON, England, May 7. — The government rejected parliamentary demands today for direct action to halt Egypts ban on Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal. Conservative M. P., J. W. Peyton, accused Egyptian Premier Samal Abdel Nasser of "behaving likea buccaneer." He said Nassers "recent, conduct . . . gives no one any ground for any confidence in him as a custodian of an international waterway." Communists in Reign of Terror KATAMANDU, Nepal, May 7.— The Chinese Communists are carrying out a "reign of terror" in Tibet and the capital city of Lhasia is "full of fear," reports reaching here from the Communist-occupied nation said today. Reports, brought out by officials here for the coronation of Nepalese King Mahendra, said vast areas of the mountain theocracy were in revolt against the Chinese Communist "Colonialists" and that tribesmen still were fighting the Reds. Dr. White Chats with Pope Pius VATICAN CITY, May 7.— Pope Pius XII. -was told that President Eisenhowers health was good during a chat today with American heart specialist Dr. Paul Dudley White of Boston. Dr. White was among a group of doctors received in audience by 1 the Pope following their attendance at a cardiology symposium at Foglia. White , treated the president for the heart attack he suffered .in Denver last year. Rebels Attack European Farms ALGIERS, Algeria , May 7.— Algerian . Rebels launched a series of co-ordinate attacks against European farms in West Algeria today. First reports said 20 4 Europeans were massacred. Authorities announced that strong Rebel commando groups struck during the night against farmsteads in the Guiard, Benisaf „ Turgot and Ain-Temouchment region.
