► 1 ■ i, By JOE HIRSCH CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 7. — Some Derby ami Post-Derby Quotes: Dave Erb: "We got pinched off by Career Boy a bit going into the first turn and I was a lot farther out. of it down the backstretch than I wanted to be, ... I asked him Needles for something at the five-eighths pole and he spit out the bit and I thought My God. . . . But he got to running again with about three furlongs to go and I was pretty confident in the stretch. No ones ever beat him when hes been close at the eighth pole. ... To win the Derby is the ambition of every rider in the world. ... It took me 17 years to make it and it was a long grind, but it was worth it." . Eric Guerin : "Countermand came out on me at the far turn, just about the time I was preparing to set Career Boy down for the drive. . . .. By the time I ducked inside of him, .the race was over for practical, purposes. He made up a lot of ground in the stretch, though, andhed have been close if he hadnt been bothered." Willie Shomaker: "Terrang went to the front very kindly for me. . . . But be ran out of gas around the quarter pole and flattened out bailly the rest of the way home." Eddie Arcaro: "Head Man doesnt want a mile and a quarter but we had a pleasant journey most of the way. I eased him up at the finish. . . . That Needles had all the worst of it, traveling out there in the middle of the track where the going, wasnt nearly as good as it was on the inside." Willie Hartack: "No excuses. . . . Fabius ran his best race but got outrun. He was trying to get out before the eighth pole and I switched sticks and hit him right handed. Then I switched back in the final strides. He was still running hard at the end." Paul Bailey: "Ben A. Jones was seinj? all right when he suddenly coughed antT seemed to unbuckle." ■ Arnold Kirkland: "Countermand- kept wanting to go to the outside on both turns. ... He never did that before." Steve Brooks: "Count Chic ran a game race but Come On Red bothered us around the three-eighths pole and we couldnt make up the ground we lost." Doug Dodson: "No Regrets might have been a little short. ... He should improve off this race."
