French-Bred Corax 12 Lengths Behind Arnstein Colt Shows First Liking to Fast Strip; Will Of Allah Takes Show Award By BOB HORW0JD JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 7.— Revelling in the sloppy going, Danny Arnsteins Eiffel Blue took the lead, going to the first .turn in todays featured Greenvale Purse and coasted to the finish of the- mile and a sixteenth a dozen lengths before John S. Kroeses extreme outsider, Corax, who led Isidor Biebers Will of Allah by a half length. Mrs. Jan Burkes Son of Eriri was another half length out of the money and a nose before Winding Way Farms Golf Ace, the odds-on choice. Golf Ace appeared to dislike the going and was also trying to bear out most of the way. "Peejay" Bailey had the "armchair" ride on Eiffel Blue, who had- won the Bahamas Stakes at Hialeah on a soft track, but had been beaten necks by Son of Erin and Will of Allah in his last two starts here on fast tracks. Eiffel Blue paid .60, .20 and .10 across the board. The place and show prices on the French-bred Corax, who jcame from last place with a rush in the stretch lit up the board with 3.50 and •1.20. The winning son of Eiffel Tower from Caribbean Miss, by Stimulus, w"as clocked in 1:44%. Eiffel Blue, Will of Allah, Son of Erin and Golf Ace are eligible to Saturdays 5,000-added Withers at the same distance. Golf Aces performance was sadly disillusioning as the colt had finished second to Needles in the Flamigno, fourth behind that colt in the Florida Derby and been disqualified after winning the Wood Memorial over Head Man. However, his only really bad race this year was in Hia-leahs Everglades Stakes, in which he was unable to handle the sloppy track and finished ninth, beaten 20 lengths. Get for Home Shows Speed Sailing Free was first out of the gate from his inside stall at the start of the feature, but Bailey quickly rushed Eiffel Blue into command and at the end of a quarter he -was a length before Sailing Free, who led Son of Erin another two lengths with Will of Allah in fourth place followed by Golf Ace. Both Son of Erin and Golf Ace tried to bear out rounding the clubhouse turn and the favorite appeared to continue to try to get out in the run down the backstretch. Corax was trailing the field at this point and was still in last place, nearing the final bend. Meanwhile, Will of Allah had slipped through on the rail and was in closest pursuit of Eiffel Blue, but could get no closer than three lengths, which sdon became five, then 10. Sailing Free soon dropped out of contention, while Son of Erin moved into third place with Golf Ace lapped on him on the outside. Eiffel Blue curved into the stretch some 10 lengths in the van, while Sol-Hi made a brief thrust that drew him almost level with Will of Allah, then faded. Golf Ace, who had made a feeble bid nearing the quarter pole, again went wide, while Corax suddenly began a move far back at the rear. As Eiffel Blue romped to the wire, Corax came on to take second money in the final strides, showing the first trace of speed he has displayed in this country. Trainer Johnny Rigione saddled the winners of the fourth and fifth races, sending out his sister Josephines Ham Bone and Kroy Way Farms Copper Disc for a popular double. Ham Bone got up in the final strides of the six-furlong fourth to neck Phil Jacobsons pacemaking Comea-way, who led Iafrates Gentle Knock by the same margin. Ham Eone paid .40 as second choice to Circus Parade, who was a weary fourth, and was clocked in 1:13%. Bill Boland rode Copper Disc, who drew out at the end of a long drive to lead .Mrs. Julie Mirons Assistance by a length and a half at the end of a mile and a sixteenth in 1:47%.
