Kleestep Front-Running Victor at Cahokia Downs First Four Springs Surprise; McCadden Scores Initial Win By J. J. HAIIN CAHOKIA DOWNS, East St. Louis, HI., May 30. Kleestep, a three-year-old daughter of the fashionable Fighting Step, owned by the partnership of Joe Mattingly and Ralph Hardick and ridden by Ray McEwen, won the Pasadena Hills Purse, a six and one-half furlongs dasli that served as the feature here Wednesday night. The chestnut filly, who usually comes from behind, went to the front soon after the start and made each post a winning one and, although she was faltering near the end, was under terrific pressure to score a length victory over the fast-closing Princess Ellen, owned by Sam E. Pershall. Stelle Farms Egyptian Queen, the public choice, was two lengths to the rear of the Pershall color-bearer. In the secondary, the Lakeshire Purse, a seven-furlongs sprint, Jake W. Sheridans First Four sprang a surprise in copping that heat under a daring rideby apprentice William Patrick McCadden, who was scoring the initial victory of his riding career. While First Four got home by only a length, McCadden had her well in hand near the finish and was easing his mount in defeating Bonnie Gains, Bleak and six others. The winner, overlooked in the wagering, paid the huge mutuel of 29. Wether Bell, the favorite in the opening number, put on a show for the early comers. She rolled gracefully over the inside fence in front of the clubhouse, barely missing apprentice Noble Hay Jr., who was thrown over the rail a moment before Wether Bell took her tumble. After chasing the favorite around the Infield for about 15 minutes, the stewards ordered her scratched. Brake, the favorite, woii the six and one-half furlongs race and most of the 5,957 in attendance who coupled the son of Bob Murphy in the Daily Double with Mais Boy, winner of the second heat, received 2.20, one of the smallest of the season. The local club returns to night racing tomorrow following the first afternoon card of the season. Nine races are to be staged, in which the Pine Lawn Purse, a five-furlongs dash for three-year-olds and upward and in . which nine better-grade sprinters are entered, is the feature. The supporting number is the fifth, another allowance affair and called the Anita Park Purse. It is at seven furlongs. The usual two-year-old race is down for decision and is to be used as the third race. All of the other events drew capacity fields. Post time will be the regular 8:30 CDT
