Iron Liege Purse At Omaha Track New Shift Favored to Turn Back Shifty Couplings of F. O. Akin and Ray Danner By DEAN WILLIAMS AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., May 30. New Shift, the winner of the Ak-Sar-Ben Princess Handicap, is among the 10 three-year-olds named for the running of the sixth race Friday. The race has been titled the Iron Liege" in honor of Mrs. Gene Markeys Kentucky Derby winner. The track for several years has named one of its top three-year-old allowance races for the years Derby winner at Churchill Downs. The Ak-Sar-Ben Princess winner, owned by Wesley Bolen of Quinter, Kansas, thrilled local patrons as he gained the decision in the first of Omahas major sophomore trials. The brown son of Scene -shifter was seventh entering the stretch. Jockey Jack Keene took the fast-closing three-year-old to the middle of the track, where he flashed enough late speed to carry him to a nose victory of E. K. Careys Twilight Run. New Shift will be going an added half furlong Friday. The backers the Bolen gelding gained in the Princess and the added distance of the Iron Liege should sent him to the post as the publics choice. Couple Big Coupon, Flashy Fellow Iowian F. O. Akin will be represented in the headliner by Big Coupon and Flashy Fellow. Big Coupon, probably the better of the two representatives, has finished a second and a third in two starts at Ak-Sar-Ben. In each start the speedy daughter of Bymeabond has opened a commanding lead, then tired just enough to be overtaken a the wire. Ray Danner has also named a pair of sophomores for the Iron Liege. Prince Gala and Auctioneer, the Danner color-bearers, have both gained victories during the 1957 racing season. Prince Gala has won three races this year, while Auctioneer gained his only decision at Oaklawn Park. Prince Gala won the first race of his career this spring at Oaklawn Park, then went on to win. two more races against allowance company. He most recently carried the gold and black silks of Ray Danner to victory at Sportsmans Park. The son of Blue Gay has made one start here and appears to be the horse to watch. Hi-Socks, one of the two winners named for the Friday feature, beat a good field of three-year-olds in the Omaha Businessmens Purse. The chestnut gelding owned by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Helton, won that six-furlong affair in the good time of 1:11. The good looking son of Boodle will be asked to face stiffer competition Friday, but he should give a good account of .himself. The local patrons will get their first chance to view some of the tracks better two-year-olds in Fridays fourth race. Murray. Canyon, winner of the 0,000 Bay Meadows Futurity, will go to the post in the fourth race in preparation for future stakes engagements at this track. Others scheduled to face the W. C. Goodman colt will be such good juveniles as Mary Ann Deck, Bob Knight, Clara Knight, Okie Doakie, Lucky Again, Curly Kem, Sand T Royal Leo, Bold Reply, Fargo and Miche Claire. ..
