Veteran Steve Lawler, 85, Dies at Brooklyn Home Former Rider and Trainer Had Been Ailing for Short Period BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 30. Steve Lawler, one of the veterans of racing, died at his Brooklyn, N. Y., home last evening. Cause of his death was not made known although he had been ailing for a short period. The body is at McManus Funeral Home, Flatlands and Flatbush avenues in Brooklyn. Funeral arrangements will be made known later. Lawler, 85, had not been active in racing for the past decade. He entered the sport many years ago, first as an exercise boy and later a jockey. He rode races against "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons during that period and later became a trainer. Lawler saddled the 1914 Belmont Futurity winner, Trojan, who scored in mud knee deep at Saratoga Springs, N. Y., for the Quincy Stable of the late Q. Johnson. He trained other horses for various owners down thrpugh the years.
