Housewife Wins Yearling Colt Given by Hazel Park Mrs. Agnes Strong Chooses Name Frozen Fire; Takes ,000 Cash HAZEL PARK, Mich., June 25. — Mrs. Agnes H. Strong, a housewife living at 22971. .Gary Lane, St. Claire Shores, Mich., won the Royal Gem II. yearling colt, the Appreciation Day awarcLthis year at Hazel Park with the name of Frozen Fire. Mrs. Strongs husband, Clarence R., is an employee of the Defense Department, working as a specification writer for the Ordnance Tank Automotive Command in Detroit. Neither, Mrs. Strong nor her husband have owned horses before and therefore they decided to accept the ,000 cash guarantee that went with the colt. In view of this, Frozen Fire will be disposed of by the track at public auction to be held in the paddock at 3:00 p. m., on Tuesday, July 2. Both the Strongs have been racing- fans through the years with the two attending the Maryland courses frequently during the pre-war years and prior to their coming to Michigan in 1942. The opening of Hazel Park in 1949 found the Strongs becoming Saturday regulars. Photography is the hobby of the Strongs, but they use horse racing as their main form of recreation, both being quite content in doing their own handicapping with the help of Daily Racing Form past performances. The Strongs picked up their slips for naming the colt on Appreciation Day, tak- ing them home with them and, with the help of an encyclopedia, arrived at a list of names. The following Saturday found them narrowing the group down to just two, with Mr. Strong electing to take Sparkle Plenty as his choice, while Mrs. Strong picked out what proved to be the winning entry. This was the first contest for the Strongs for during the past two years they have been out of town on vacation during this period. When asked what she would do with the money, Mrs. Strong replied, "It goes in the bank and stays there."
