23 Suburban Handicap Candidates Dedicate, Traffic Judge Head Roster Run Historic Nine Furlongs July 4; Career Boy Named But Not Likely to Start By Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 25. — Mrs. Jan Burkes Dedicate and Lou P. Dohertys Traffic Judge head a roster of 23 mature horses named for the 71st running of the 5,000 Suburban Handicap, it wds announced today. The historic mile and a quarter will be renewed on July 4 this year, after having been the traditional Memorial Day fixture for more than enough years to make the tradition valid. In their last encounter, Dedicate attempted to concede eight pounds to Traffic Judge in the Metropolitan Mile on June 8 and failed by almost a length. It is expected that racing secretary Jimmy Kilroe will narrow this weight margin a trifle for the longer stake, but Dedicate and Traffic Judge are almost certain jto be the top-weights and both are training well for the fixture. The three horses immediately following this pair in the Metropolitan, Mrs. Josephine P. Bays Greek Spy, Howell E. Jacksons Tick Tock and George D. Wideners Tellarian have also been named for the Suburban. Edgemere First Five Named Edward Seinfelds Admiral Vee, C. T. Chenerys Third Brother, Happy Hill Farms Kingmaker, Greentree Stables Riley and Mrs. Wallace Gilroys Oh Johnny, the first five to finish in the nine-furlong Edgemere Handicap on June 19, are also inthe Suburban. Incidentally, Greek Spy and Tellarian failed to confirm their good races in the Metropolitan when sent back in the Edgemere 11 days later. C. V. Whitneys Career Boy, who has not started since his creditable fourth in the Prix de lArc de Triomphe at Longchamp last fall, has also been named for the Suburban, but cant be considered a likely starter. The son of Phalanx has been training well, but doesnt seem far enough advanced for this engagement. Preston Burch has named a three-year-old for this Suburban in the person of . Brookmeade Stables Oligarchy. While no three-year-old has been successful in the stake since Crusader scored his first victory in the stake in 1936, Oligarchy showed that he could cope with older horses when finishing second to Jabneh in the Hialeah Turf Handicap at a mile and a half on March 2. An injury that has responded to treatment kept the colt out of the Belmont Stakes. * C. Mahlon Klines Lofty Peak, who scored a startling victory on the main track here m his last outing, after having been considered a turf specialist, has been training splendidly for the Suburban. The complete list of nominations to the Suburban Handicap follows: Admiral Vee Greek Spy Ricci Tavi Attica Kingmaker Riley Beam Rider "Lofty Peak Tick Tock Busher Fantasy Mr. Al L. Tellarian Career Boy Oh Johnny Thinking Cap Charlevoix Oligarchy Third Brother Countermand Paper Tiger Traffic Judge Dedicate Portersville
