Y., June 25. — Though there were no startling surprises in the early part of the afternoon, it was not until after the running of the sixth race and the first of the feature events, the Briarcliff Purse, that the favorite players in the crowd of 15,532 had their confidence rewarded. C. L. Heekins Bonnet, capably piloted by apprentice William A. Peake coasted to the finish of the six furlongs three lengths before Mrs. N. Troy Jones* Korestes, who led Colonnade Farms Mabe Cee by a half length. It was another lengths to Mrs. Ben P. Whitakers Precious Lady. Bonnet paid .80 and stepped -the six furlongs in il:12. Despite a brief, but heavy, downpour last night the track was fast all day, though the horses were not speedy enough to make this too clear. Bonnet is a daughter of Bolero — Del Turban, by Abdel, and was scoring her first victory of the year. Ruth M. Roeblings Belle Epoque, a French filly who was one of the best of her generation as a two-year-old in 1955, but had showed nothing in three American starts last year, made her debut in this dash and at least showed early speed. When George Cassidyjpressed the button opening the gate, Belle Epoque shot into command, was seriously challanged by Mabe Cee and-ripping off a quarter in :22% before she Bonnet. The invader held on for another furlongs after being passed, then faded as though i nneed of a race, todays being her first start in almost a year. - Mabe Cee and Bonnet vied for the lead rounding the far turn and passing the three-furlong pole, where the favorite took command, while Isle of Shine moved into third place, followed by Belle Epoque, Korestes, Precious Lady, who was going very wide, and Lucie Manette. Once in the van, Bonnet drew out steadily under mild urging, while Mabe Cee was unable to withstand the closing rush of Korestes and Precious Lady managed to finish fairly well, once. she, was straightened away in the stretch. Right at the end, young Peake took Bonnet under wraps. Though finishing with only Belle Epoque behind her, Isle of Shine also showed improvement over her three previous American starts, having speed for a little more than half a mile. The Irish three-year-old won four of her five starts overseas last year. Two of the seven fillies and mares in the third event have been bred and believed to be in foal. Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Sweet Wendy G., who paid a trip to the court of Our John William, finished third behind Georgene O. Renicks Valcarie and Midas Farms Bravely waving, while Winding Way Farms Our Valdina, who was reported bred to Saggitarius, finished sixth. Valcarie, ridden by Willie Lester, paid .80 and was teletimed in 1:13%. John M. Schiffs Norsemaid was the favorite and finished fourth, then was led away for ,000 by Max Kahlbaum. MRS. ETHEL D. JACOBS — Owner of Paper Tiger, well regarded member of todays Masschusefts Handicap field.
