Arlington Park By J. J. Murphy ■ Burr Gets Manassas Mount in Stars, Stripes Zitnik Four-Year-Old Comes to Life on Grass Erb to Ride Iron Liege in Armour on Saturday ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June * 25. — Jockey Charlie Burr, who recently drew a stiff fine, plus a 19-racing day suspension for tampering with the machine with the machine weighing during the Balmoral meeting, will have an excellent chance of partially breaking even soon after his enforced vacation ends on July 3. The following afternoon, he will have the mount on John Zitniks four-year-old, Manassas, who will likely go to the post-as one of the favorites in the 5,000 added Stars and Stripes Handicap, the feature race on the Independence Day program. Manassas, a son of Bull Run — Laura Lee, who registered his third straight victory on the grass in defeating a quality field of turf horses in the Assault Purse here Monday, will be seeking his first stakes victory in the Stars and Stripes. Bred by -a couple of racing secretaries— Allan Levin and Gil Haus — Manassas has seemingly discovered that grass racing is his forte following a so-so early career on dirt tracks. As a two-year-old, he won three of eight and earned less than ,000. Last year, he started 13 times and won four purses. And this season, prior to his grass ventures at Balmoral, he had clicked but once, that in a mud race at- Oaklawn Park. He was subsequently unplaced twice at Oaklawn and twice at Churchill Downs. Since embarking on his grass career, he has taken the measure of such as Bernburgoo, Blue Choir and Blue Volt, all stakes winners, which he will probably meet again in the July 4 headliner. His lifetime earnings are now just a trifle short of 0,000. Coloradoans Small Unit Lightly Regarded Jphn Zitnik, who owns Manassas is-originally from Cripple Creek, Colo., which, we believe, was the hometown of the late H. Guy Bedwell. Zitnik now makes his home in East St. Louis, 111. He Jias maintained- a modest stable for several seasons and at present has but one horse other than Manassas. His horses were held in such light regard previous to the Balmoral meeting that Zitnik deemed himself fortunate to be alloted stalls at the former Lincoln Fields track, from which point they were vanned to Washington Park. Zitnik kept telling the folks that Manassas was a good runner and was deserving of a place in the Washington Park stalls, but those in charge of assigning stable space were dubious. Manassas has now convinced one and all of his worth, and it appears as if his vanning days are over. The Zitnik racer could be another Cinderella horse. At least, he will have a chance to prove it in the Stars and Stripes that last year was taken by Sir Tribal, another runner with a modest beginning. The three-year-old Mister Jive, whb came from last place to finish, fifth in the Chicagoan at Balmoral, will make his next start in Saturdays Laurance Armour Memorial here and will be ridden by Willie Carstens.
