Bella Paola Scores Easily In 1,000 Guineas Classic French Fillies Finish One-Two For Second Year at Newmarket By VERNON MORGAN Reuters Sports Editor NEWMARKET, England, May 2.— The French filly Bella Paola scored a comfortable victory today in the 1,000 Guineas classic, run over the Rowley Mile here. Living up to her reputation, Bella Paola strode to the front 2 furlongs out and won readily at odds of 8 to 11 to credit owner Francois Dupre with his first English classic victory. Bella Paola, a big daughter of the German sire Ticino, is certain to rule a strong favorite for the Epsom Oaks in June after todays impressive performance. Nearest to her at the finish was another French challenger, Prince Aly Khans Amante, who started at 9 to 1 and finished a length and a half behind Dupres flying filly. The French thus repeated their—f eat of last year, when they took the first two places in this race. Trailing five lengths behind Amante was the first of the English candidates — Lord Milfords Alpine Bloom — fourth choice in the bettingat 100 to 7. Persian Wheel, seeking to complete a classic double for Queen Elizabeth, who won the 2,000 Guineas on Wednesday with Pall Mall, never appeared a winner and finished fourth. She was the second choice at 7 to 1. Dupre, French hotelman who has owned horses in England and France for over 40 years, made the journey to Newmarket today to ses his grand filly score in the race, worth 5,765. Bella Paola, trained by Francois Mathet, was ridden by Serge Boullenger, Frances champion jockey. Dupre said after the race: "I, was very pleased with her performance today — she won quite comfortably. I bought her dam, Rhea II., when I saw her in a field near Bologne — I knew her breeding — and took her back to France where she. won two i races for me.
