■ ■ » — — — . _ Spring Meeting Opens Today, At Ohios Beulah Park Track Ten Entered in Six-Furlong * Inaugural Purse With Pecan Looming .Staunch Favorite i I By W. A. CRUSE BEULAH PARK, Grove City, Ohio, May 2. — Racing returns to the Central- Ohio area Saturday afternoon when the Beulah Park Jockey Club inaugurates its 19-day spring meeting. A crowd of 8,000 or more is expected to turn out to witness the opening-day program- of nine races which will be featured by the ,000 Inaugural Purse at 6 furlongs." So attractive were the« conditions as drafted by Fred Burton, who has returned to the racing secretarys post after an absence of several years, that six of the nine events drew capacity fields of 12. Only races falling short of the maximum figure are the Inaugural, which will be run eighth on the program, and the fifth and seventh. The fifth, confined to three-year-olds, lured eight of that age, while the seventh attracted 11 entries, one short of the maximum. Coming Off Ascot Win Ten were entered in the Inaugural, which appears to be at the mercy of E. W. Schmltts Pecan, an impressive winner only last Saturday in a division of the Akron Handicap at Ascot Park. Pecan, endowed with early speed, may make every post a winning one under the guidance of jockey J. C. Fernandez. Others in the Inaugural are H. V. Courtneys Lucky Tim, El Rancho T61s Lagrin, S. A. Calders Nival, W. F. Delphs Flying Doge. Jimmy Bronnenbergs Lotogo, Mr. and Mrs. Walter -Kellers Star Marque, Gateway Stables Big Steve and the M. K. Essig entry of Crips Sunny and Misty Red. The Inaugural lost much of its lustre when Alan Holman failed to enter Fabu-con, winner of the race a year ago. Fabu-con has been working impressively but apparently Holman felt that his ace sprinter was not yet ready. The Columbus-owned Lucky Tim could .make matters interesting for Tecan. He ROBERT J. DIENST— President-general manager of Beulah Park, which opens for a 19-day run today. has been working in more than satisfactory fashion. Star Marque is remembered for her smashing victory in the Beulah Governors Handicap a year ago but she may find the distance of 6 furlongs somewhat short. The Governors is a test of 1 1-16 miles. The M. K. Essig coupling of Crips Sonny and Misty Red could prove troublesome but any speculation regarding the Inaugural running seems to begin and end with Pecan. Track superintendent C. K. Keller has the entire plant in immaculate condition for return of the sport. No major changes or improvements were undertaken during the winter months. ■ Post time for the first race each day will be 2:30 pjn. EST, with nine events on Wednesday and Saturdays and eight on all other days.
