Saumell to Ride for Merrill Jr. WHEELING DOWNS, Wheeling, W. Va., May 2. — Francisco Saumell, the leading rider at this track, will pack his tack following the Saturday program and depart for Fort Erie in Canada. The Cuban has signed a contract to ride for Frank Merrill, Jr., the second leading trainer in North America the past three years. Trainer Pat Santo, who has been commuting between here and Fort Erie, is reported to have recommended Saumell to the leading Canadian conditioner.
