Pink Velvet Joins Balmoral Colony Columbiana Victress Being Pointed for Modesty Cap On Meets First Saturday HOMEWOOD, 111., May 2. — Top-level competition in the filly and mare division was literally assured for Balmoral Jockey Clubs 1958 spring meeting at Washington Park with the arrival from New York yesterday of Bill Beasleys Pink Velvet at the Homewood course. She. joins Mrs. Connie Rings California " champion. Market Basket; Mrs. Ada L. Rices Beautillion, and Ellis Farms Little Pache, all now prepping at Washington Park for Balmorals opening oh Monday, May 12. The Canadian-owned Pink Velvet, a four-year-old daughter of Polynesian — Bayrose, already has accounted for the Columbiana Handicap at Hialeah this year, and was second in the Suwanne River at Gulfstream Park. Last year, she ranked among the best three-year-old fillies with five Canadian stakes victories, plus firsts in the Margate at Atlantic City and the Jersey Belle at Garden State, defeating Romanita among others in the latter. Modesty on His Agenda Trainer John Passero revealed that Pink Velvet is being pointed for Balmorals 0,- " 000 added Modesty Handicap on the first Saturday, May 17, as well as the 0,000 added Beverly Handicap at Washington Park on June 7. Similar plans have been mapped for Market Basket, Beautillion and Little Pache. Meantime, the Balmoral thoroughbred population continues to grow day by day. Latest arrivals included trainer Arnold Winick with 26 horses: Ike Mourar. 11; Charles Sanborn, 12; C. Kerr, 5; W. S. Bradley, E. B. Carpenter, N. B. Cohen, E. C. Dobson, J. L. Anderson, Buddy Lepp-man, Milton Kite and L. Rothermel. The invasion will continue next week with the entire string of William Hal Bishop due to arrive from Laurel, with jockey Clarence Meaux. Many others are due from Kentucky, Florida and the East.
