Value Monmouths Chief Hurdle Cap at 2,000 Invitational Hurdle Race Tops Tracks Summer Chase Program OCEANPORT, N. J., May 2.— The Midsummer Hurdle Handicap, principal feature of Monmouth Parks 1958 hurdle program, which commences on July 7 and runs through July 31, will carry a purse of 2,-000, President Amory L. Haskell said today. This richest of American hurdle events will be worth 5,000"to the winner, ,000 to the second horse, ,000 to the third and ,000 to the fourth. With no nomination or starting fees, ihis invitational event" for three-year-olds and upward at about 2 miles will attract the leading hurdle horses in America. As in former years, outstand"-ing hurdlers from England, Ireland, France and Italy will be invited to participate. Another highlight of Monmoaths hurdle racing season will be the Monmouth National Maiden, to be run on July 11. This ,500 added fixture is one of a series to be run during the 1958 meetings at Belmont Park, Monmouth Park and Saratoga. Hurdle racing, since its inception at New Jerseys seashore thoroughbred center, has become increasingly popular throughout the years. Last season, patrons and horsemen alike enjoyed the finest season of racing over the lesser obstacles ever conducted at Monmouth Park. Monmouth Parks program of flat stakes, with 10,000 in added monies, when supplemented by the hurdle stake program totaling 9,500, will provide an over-all stake distribution figure of 39,500 for its 50-day summer meeting.
