► Searching Starts In Bed o Roses Gives Plotter, Lori-EI and Five Other Feminine Rivals Weight in Jamaica Handicap By DON FAIR JAMAICA. L. I., N. Y.. May 2.— Searching, speedy five-year-old daughter of War Admiral and Big Hurry, from the Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs stable, heads a field of eight fillies and mares scheduled to meet here Saturday afternoon in the second running of the 8,000 Bed o* Roses Handicap. The Jacobs mare will spot her seven rivals weight when she goes to the post in the .1 1-16 miles staTces under a bulky 123 pounds burden. Searching, who will be handled in the week end headliner by capable Bobby TJs-sery. recently defeated several of her Bed o Roses opponents in the 6-furlong Correction Handicap. Prior to her Correction conquest, the Jacobs star was unplaced in a pair of Santa Anita engagements, but during her 1957 campaign she was the impressive winner of the Distaff, Vagrancy and Gallorette, also placing in Saratogas Diane. Searchings recent morning trials .have been most impressive and she is expected to receive a major share of the tote support. Lori-EI Carries 116 Included in the band of probable Bed o Roses starters are Harry La Montagnes hard-hitting Plotter. 117; Michael R. Sotos Lori-EI, 116; Mrs. Gerard S. Smiths Outer Space, 113; King Ranchs Dotted Line, and Joe W. Browns Fanciful Miss, each assigned 112 pounds. Also Morty Freedmans Gay Life, J08, and Roy R. Hunts Hoosier Honey, 106 pounds. Jockey Ray Broussard, who does the bulk of the riding for the New Orleans-owned Brown establishment, will handle Fanciful Miss in the Bed o Roses. Johnny j Ruane is engaged for Gay Life, and Ted Atkinson will be at the reins on Hoosier Honey. Bill Boland rides Outer Space, Paul Bailey is named on Plotter, and Angel Val-enzuela, who has been showing good form at the current meeting, will be up on Lori-EI. Searchings Correction vic tory was earned . at the direct expense of Fanciful Miss, who | | wasa length and one-half off the Jacobs mare at the wire, while two lengths away Outer Space saved third. Lori-EI finished fourth in. that sprint stakes "and had a rather rough trip through the early stretch, which may have cost her a chance for major honors. The middle distance of the Bed o Roses undoubtedly will prove advantageous to Dotted Line, slated to make her 1958 seasonal debut, and Fanciful Miss. The latter filly, successful in five starts last season and an easy winner .of an overnight dash at the Fair Grounds, also was a strong second to her stable companion. Tenacious, in the 1 1-16 miles of the Louisiana Handicap, decided February 1. Dotted Line, a five-year-old homebred daughter of Princequillo and Inscribe, certainly needs no introduction to Empire State racing followers. Last year the King Ranch miss scored convincingly in the Beverly and Vineland handicaps, placed In the Firenze and was a sharp; contender in several other filly and mare fixtures. Although she did no better than fourth in ithe 2 1-16 miles Display Handicap, Dotted Line raced gamely over the gruelling route and she must be regarded as dangerous at the Bed o Roses weights. Plotter, a five-year-old homebred Double Jay mare, made her initial 1958 start here in an overnight event on April 23 and ran third behind First Landing and Scansion, beaten slightly less than two lengths. However, she may have needed her race and will probably be one of the keener contenders in the half -holiday headliner. Plotter captured the 1957 renewals of the Top Flight and Vagrancy handicaps, and was a Continued on Page Fotty-Two Searching Gives Seven Foes Weight in Bed o Roses Cap "~ Continued from Page Three strong second to Pucker Up in the Beldame. Gay Life raced well in stakes competition .last season and Lori-EI trimmed a classy field in the Kentucky Oaks. Outer space i salways dangerous on firm footing, while Hoosier Honey would have tolurn in an unusually "big race" to figure seriously in the Bed o Roses. Best supporting attraction on the week end program is the Valley Stream Purse, 6 furlongs for four-year-olds and up. Joe Jones, Octagonal and One Stroke are expected to go well against Bushers Idol. Cavort, Golden East and Gay Warrior in the secondary offering.
